Sean Burke Called Up by Chicago White Sox

COLLEGE PARK, MD -- Maryland baseball alum Sean Burke was called up by the Chicago White Sox on Tuesday. Burke becomes the fifth former Terp to be on an MLB roster in 2024.

In his time at Maryland, Burke finished with an 8-3 record with a 2.97 ERA and 142 strikeouts in 97.0 innings pitched. Burke was named a Collegiate Baseball Freshman All-American in the Covid-shortened 2020. Burke's 107 strikeouts in 2021, led the Terps and ranked second in the Big Ten. Burke held opposing batters to a .178 batting average against, the third-best mark in the Big Ten among starting pitchers in 2021.

Burke was drafted in the third round of the 2021 draft by the White Sox. In his time with the White Sox Organization, Burke has thrown 233.1 innings while striking out 299 batters. This season while playing with the White Sox's Triple-A affiliate in Charlotte Burke has made 16 starts while striking out 86 batters in 64.1 innings, while holding opposing hitters to a .199 batting average.

Burke is the most-recent Terp to get called up to the big leagues. The last Terp to make their Major League debut was Jose Cuas. Cuas made his debut for the Kansas City Royals on May 31, 2022 against Cleveland, tossing an inning in relief with a strikeout.
