COLLEGE PARK, MD -- Maryland opens its Big Ten slate with the second match of a four-match home stand against No. 5 Michigan State.

The Terrapins wrapped up their non-conference schedule with a 4-0 shutout of VCU at home on Sunday. Kennedy Bell scored twice in the first seven minutes of play, while Peyton Bernard tallied her first collegiate goal to put the Terps up 3-0 at the half. Delaney DeMartino added her second of the season in the 70th minute to cap the scoring. Liz Beardsley made seven stops to pick up her third clean sheet of the season.

Series History - Michigan State
  • The Terrapins and Spartans are fairly recent rivals with the first meeting coming in 2014 when Maryland joined the Big Ten. Michigan State holds a 4-2-3 advantage in the series, including three straight victories.
  • In last season's game, the Spartans scored three first half goals and tacked on two in the second half to top Maryland, 5-0, in East Lansing. Liz Beardsley made five stops in net for the Terps.

Ringing the Bell Twice
  • Kennedy Bell's two-goal performance in the Terps' 4-0 win over VCU on Sept. 8 was the first time a Terp scored twice in a game since Lisa McIntyre scored twice against James Madison on Aug. 27, 2023.
  • Bell opened the scoring in the 5th minute, finishing a scramble inside the 8-meters. She added her second of the day less than two minutes later on a breakaway off of a beautifully paced through ball from Peyton Bernard.
  • Bell is the first Terp to score twice in the first half of a match since teammate Ava Morales found the net twice in the opening 45 minutes at Purdue on Oct. 23, 2022.

Olimpico!
  • Emily Lenhard got on the scoresheet in a big way in Maryland's 1-1 draw with James Madison on Aug. 25. Lenhard took a corner for the Terrapins in the 83rd minute, scoring from the corner spot for an Olimpico. The goal was the first of her collegiate career, and came on her lone shot of the game.
  • Lenhard has played in seven games and made six starts for the Terps in 2024. Lenhard is tied for second on the team lead with two goals. The first year player from Stafford, Virginia is fourth on the team in minutes played with 529, and is averaging 76 minutes played across the seven games.
Dishing Out The Assists
  • Maryland has 11 assists on the season, and are led by Emily Lenhard who has three. Following Lenhard is the trio of Kennedy Bell, Ellie Egeland, and Ava Morales who all have\ two assists through the team's first eight games.
  • Lenhard picked up two assists in Maryland's game against George Mason, which is the first time in almost two years that a Maryland women's soccer player picked up two assists in a game. The last player to accomplish the feat was Catherine DeRosa, who had two assists back on September 4, 2022 against George Mason.
  • Ava Morales picked up her first collegiate assist this season, coming Maryland's 2-0 season-opening win over Lehigh. Morales picked up her second assist of the campaign against Stony Brook back on August 18.

Emily Lenhard leads the Terps with three assists. Lenhard had two assists in Maryland's game against George Mason, which was the first time in almost two years the a Terp had two assists in a game.
Going Back-To-Back
  • With her 22nd minute goal against Towson on Sept. 5, Taryn Raibon scored in consecutive games for the Terps. Raibon's two goals this season are tied for the second-most on the team with Kelsey Smith and Delaney DeMartino.
  • The last time a Terp scored in consecutive games was last season, when Ava Morales scored in third-straight games. Morales' streak last season Sept. 3 against Towson, and continued with goals against George Mason (Sept. 7, 2023) and at Binghamton (Sept. 10, 2023).
Taryn Raibon
Taryn Raibon has scored in consecutive games for the Terps against George Mason and Towson. This marked the second season in a row that a Terps player scored in consecutive games.
Scouting the Spartans
  • Michigan State comes into Ludwig Field unbeaten with a 5-0-2 mark in non-conference play. The Spartans have four shutout wins in their last five outings, including a 1-0 home win vs. Loyola Chicago on Sunday, Sept. 8. Michigan State is battle-tested with a 2-1 road win over then-No. 15 Notre Dame to open the season on Aug. 15, as well as 2-2 ties with then-No. 9 Arkansas on Aug. 22 and then-No. 15 Xavier on Sept. 1.
  • Providence grad transfer Meg Hughes leads the team with 10 points on four goals and two assists. Purdue grad transfer Emily Mathews is close behind with nine points on four goals and one assist. Junior Emerson Sargeant leads the Spartans with four assists.
  • Grad student Kaitlyn Parks transferred in from Wake Forest prior to the 2023 season and has been a fixture between the pipes ever since. After starting all 22 matches in 2023, Parks has started five of Sparty's seven matches in 2024, including all three against ranked opponents. She has a 3-0-2 record with 18 saves, a 1.00 GAA, and two shutouts.
