Terps Defeat Hoosiers, 1-0, Advance To 2-0 In Conference Play

BLOOMINGTON, IN – Maryland men's soccer defeated Indiana, 1-0, in a suspended game that started on Friday night and was finished on Saturday morning at Bill Armstrong Stadium. Following a 3-0 win over then-No. 8 Wisconsin, Maryland (4-1-3, 2-0 Big Ten) posted a shutout against its second consecutive conference opponent.

Sophomore midfielder Leon Koehl got the Terps on the board first with a penalty kick goal in the 40th minute. The score was his team-leading third of the season. All of his goals have come on penalty kicks, and he's 3-of-3 from the spot. Koehl also leads the Big Ten Conference with his three penalty kick goals.

Koehl has the most PK goals for a Terp in a season since Malcolm Johnston scored four in 2022, going 4-for-5 from the spot.

Freshman goalkeeper Laurin Mack made a career-high five saves. Through seven games, he has 20 saves. The shutout was the second of his career, doing so in back-to-back conference games.

The last time a Terp goalkeeper posted back-to-back blank sheets in conference play was Niklas Neumann in 2021, who issued shutouts against Indiana on Oct. 31 and Northwestern on Nov. 7. The last Terp overall to record shutouts in back-to-back games was in 2022. Jamie Lowell accomplished the feat against Ohio State on Sept. 25 and Old Dominion on Sept. 30.

Maryland's defensive unit of Luca Costabile, William Kulvik, Bjarne Thiesen and Alex Nitzl held Indiana's offense in check. The Hoosiers were unable to net any of their 15 shot attempts.

Indiana is now 2-3-3 overall and 1-1 in Big Ten Play. The game was started on Friday night but play was suspended at 69:40 with 20:20 left in the game due to lightning in the area. It resumed on Saturday morning at 10 a.m.
