Terps Drop Big Ten Opener To Michigan State On Last-Second Field Goal, 27-24

COLLEGE PARK, MD – Maryland football was defeated by Michigan State, 27-24, in its Big Ten opener at SECU Stadium on Saturday. Michigan State's Jonathan Kim connected on a 37-yard field goal with one second left in the game.

Maryland took a 24-17 lead as Billy Edwards Jr. found Dylan Wade for a 28-yard score on the first play of the fourth quarter. On the ensuing drive, Michigan State drove down the field before Glendon Miller intercepted his second pass of the day. However, Michigan State tied the game on a 77-yard touchdown reception by Nick Marsh with 4:22 left in the fourth quarter. The Terps then went three and out and Kim drilled the game-winner on the ensuing possession.

Edwards passed for 253 yards. The quarterback accounted for three total touchdowns (two passing and one rushing). He now has nine rushing touchdowns in his career.

Tai Felton snagged a career-high 11 receptions for 152 yards and a touchdown. With 100+ receiving yards in the first two games of the season, Felton is the second Terp since 1996 to have at least 100 receiving yards in the first two games of the season, joining Dontay Demus in 2021. He is also the first Terp since Jermaine Lewis in 1995 to have 150+ receiving yards in any two consecutive games. Felton now has 11 career touchdown receptions, tied for 11th most in program history. He also has 330 receiving yards through two games, becoming the third Big Ten player in the last 20 years to record 300+ receiving yards through his team's first two games of the season, joining Purdue's Rondale Moore in 2019 (344) and Michigan State's Tony Lippett in 2014 (300).

Miller's performance gave him four consecutive games with an interception. He's the first Terp with a streak that long since Lewis Sanders had interceptions in five straight games from Sept. 2-Oct. 9, 1999. Miller is also the first Terp since Andreal Johnson in 1995 to have three picks in the first two games of a season.
Jalen Huskey also intercepted a pass, his first as a Terp. He now has five takeaways in his career, four at Bowling Green. With two interceptions in the game, Maryland marked the first time since 2001 that it has had multiple defensive interceptions in each of its first two games of a season.

Coach Locksley On Felton's Big Day
"Tai has been one of those guys consistently that's come through with with those plays, and we're going to need him," head coach Michael Locksley said. "We're going to need his leadership the locker room."

Edwards on The Loss
"Like coach, Locks said in the locker room, the season is not a loss, it's not a wipeout. We got to correct things. We got a really tough game coming on the road down to Charlottesville next week against UVA, and we got to get this stuff corrected and be ready for the rest of the season, for next week and and so on. It'll be tough, but we got it. We got the right guys in the locker room. I think we're all ready to get back in here, tomorrow, Monday, and watch the tape and most importantly, learn from it and rally the guys and move on."
