Terps Hand Previously Undefeated American First Loss Of Season With 3-2 Win

WASHINGTON D.C. – Maryland Volleyball defeated American 3-1 (25-27, 25-14, 25-23, 25-20, 15-13) on Saturday at Bender Arena. The Terps (3-2) handed the Eagles their first loss of the season after they were the only team in the NCAA to start at 7-0. Maryland also holds an impressive 17-0 record against American all-time. 

Maryland tied up the first set at 25 apiece with a kill by Sam Csire, but American scored two straight points to take the opening set. However, the Terps responded with wins in three of the following four sets, which was made possible by a timely 7-0 run to close out the third set and a clutch kill by Sydney Bryant in the fifth set. 

Several Terps recorded career numbers in the match. Samantha Schnitta led the Terps with a career-high 21 kills and five aces. She also added 10 digs for a double-double. She helped manufacture several runs for the Terps throughout. Csire also set a new career high, recording seven aces. She added a team-high 15 digs. Finally, Eva Rohrbach recorded her 200th career kill.   

Sydney Dowler recorded a team-high 28 assists. Bryant added 13 kills, and Lilly Gunter tallied 13 digs. 


Breaking Down The Action

Set 1: American 27 - Maryland 25 
  • Maryland went on a 5-0 run after starting the set down 2-0 with kills by Samantha Schnitta and Sydney Bryant and two aces by Sam Csire.
  • American retook the lead with a kill by Elise Sterling, leading 13-12. 
  • Four consecutive kills by Schnitta gave Maryland a 16-14 lead out of a media timeout. 
  • The Terps went on a 9-1 run to lead 21-15. 
  • A kill by Csire tied the game at 25, but American scored the set winner with two consecutive kills.   
Set 2: Maryland 25 - American 14
  • Maryland went on a 3-0 run after starting the set down 1-0 with kills by Anastasia Russ and Schnitta.  
  • Maryland and American played a back-and-forth second set, but kills by Bryant and Csire gave the Terps a 14-9 lead heading into a media timeout.  
  • The Terps went on a 9-0 run to close out the second set 25-14 with a service kill by Schnitta and a kill by Zoe Huang.  
Set 3: Maryland 25 - American 23
  • Maryland and American went back and forth in the third set but kills by Csire and Bryant gave the Terps a 7-5 lead before a timeout by American. 
  • American went on a 13-9 run to take the lead 18-14.
  • Two straight kills by Dowler and Rohrbach brought the Terps within two points, 16-18.  
  • Maryland scored three consecutive points, including two kills by Schnitta, bringing the Terps within three before an American timeout, 21-23.   
  • The Terps went on a 7-0 run to close out the third set 25-23 with kills by Schnitta, Bryant and Rohrbach.
Set 4: American 25 - Maryland 20
  • In the fourth set, both teams played back and forth. American went on a 5-0 run to take a 10-9 lead before the Terps took their first lead.  
  • The Terps scored four of the last five points, with a kill by Russ putting them ahead 16-13.  
  • Maryland called a timeout after three consecutive points by American. The Terps trailed 21-19.
  • The Eagles pulled ahead late, scoring four of the last five points to win the fourth set.
Set 5: Maryland 15 - American 13
  • Both teams traded points back and forth as the score was tied up 5-5.
  • American scored three consecutive points, including a kill by Sipahi to take the lead 10-9.
  • The Terps scored five of the last six points to retake the lead 14-12.  
  • Maryland pulled ahead late, scoring five of the last seven points to win the fifth set.
