Te-Biasu Scores Season-High As No. 14 Terps Beat Penn State, 82-73

Box Score STATE COLLEGE, PA – Sarah Te-Biasu scored a season-high 20 points as No. 14 Maryland women's basketball went wire-to-wire in its 82-73 win over Penn State at Rec Hall on Wednesday. The Terps improved to 17-4 overall, including 6-1 on the road and 7-3 in Big Ten play. It was Maryland's fifth wire-to-wire win this season, and Brenda Frese earned her 200th career win over a Big Ten opponent. It was also Frese's 599th overall as the Terps' head coach.  

The Terps opened the game on an 8-0 run and maintained their lead throughout the contest. They led 23-7 at the end of the first frame. It was the 12th time they held an opponent under 10 points in a quarter this season. Maryland continued to stretch its lead, leading by as many as 21 at 8:18 in the third quarter. It shot 32-49 (65.3%) from the field for the game, a season high and its best percentage in a Big Ten game since shooting 65.5% at Purdue on Feb. 2, 2016. 

Te-Biasu recorded her 17th career 20-point game and her first as a Terp. She shot 7-of-10 with four-made 3-pointers. The fifth-year transfer from VCU added four assists and two steals as she stepped up as the primary ball handler as Shyanne Sellers played limited first-half minutes in her first game back from injury. 

Kaylene Smikle extended her streak of double-digit scoring outings to 20 games. She scored 17 points, grabbed five rebounds and dished out two assists. Her double-figure scoring streak is the longest of her career. 

Saylor Poffenbarger added 15 points. She also recorded five assists, three rebounds, three steals and one block. It was her third consecutive game scoring in double figures. Sellers was the fourth Terp to score in double figures. She scored all 10 of her points in the second half.    

As a team, the Terps shot well from beyond the arc at 43 percent (6-of-14) and defended the 3-point line even better, holding the Lady Lions to 2-of-13 from three-point range.     

Penn State (10-12, 1-10 Big Ten) was led by Gracie Merkle's 24 points and seven rebounds. Gabby Elliott added 23 points and six rebounds. 

The Terps have won 15 of the last 16 matchups against the Lady Lions. 
 
Breaking Down The Action
  • The Terps began the game on an 8-0 run in less than two minutes. Sarah Te-Biasu and Saylor Poffenbarger each drilled 3-pointers, and Christina Dalce made a layup for the game's first points. 
  • Maryland led 23-7 at the end of the first frame, forcing Penn State to miss 10 consecutive shots. The Terps were shooting 64% from the floor. 
  • Seven different players had scored a bucket at 4:16 in the second quarter. Maryland maintained the lead at 32-19, led by Te-Biasu's eight points and Kaylene Smikle's seven points.
