Terps Comeback Comes Up Short In 4-3 Loss to Michigan

Maryland scored the match’s final three goals on Thursday, but Michigan outlasted the Terps at Ludwig Field.

COLLEGE PARK, MD — Maryland recorded a trio of goals in the second half of Thursday night's match at Ludwig Field, but the Terps' (6-10, 2-7 Big Ten) comeback came up short as they fell to Michigan (6-7-3, 3-2-3 Big Ten) 4-2 on a beautiful fall night.

Facing a 4-0 deficit, the Terps's offense erupted for two goals in under two minutes as Kelsey Smith and Ava Morales continued their fight for the team in goals and points. A late Gemma Davitian goal brought the Terps within a goal, but the hole was too great to completely climb out of on Thursday.

The Wolverines scored on the first shot of the match as Vickie Jones netted her first goal of the season in the third minute of play. Michigan took a 1-0 lead into the half despite both squads recorded five shots in the first frame.

The second half was a twin of the first as Michigan again scored on its first shot, doubling its lead on Ellie Ervin's sixth goal of the season. Just 70 seconds later, Michigan's Jenna Lang scored her second goal of 2025 as the Wolverines claimed a 3-0 advantage.

Michigan's fourth goal came in the 67th minute via Gabrielle Prych. Her sixth goal of the season added to the Wolverines' impressive offensive night. Minutes later, Smith put the Terps on the board with her fifth goal of the season. Seconds later, Morales hammered her sixth goal of the season in the back of the net to cut the Michigan lead in half and ignite the Terps' offense.  Davitian's third goal of the season brought the Terps back within a goal in the 79th minute, but Michigan held on in the final seconds to secure its sixth win of the season.  Maryland goalkeeper Faith Luckey made three saves on Thursday, putting her second in the Big Ten with 79 total saves on the season. The Terps will continue to vie for a Big Ten Conference Tournament bid with two more home matches to close out the season.

  • "The team could have given up and they didn't, and the way that they represented themselves in the final 30 minutes of the game was great to see."
  • "I think over the course of 90 minutes, we played alright tonight. I thought we were pretty cohesive. I think the team was pretty organized in possession. I think the team was pretty organized defensively."
  • "If we can play that way and eliminate some of the individual errors that led to goals, then I'd be quite happy."

Smith's Stellar Season:
  • "I was excited to get that first goal to help us get that momentum."
  • "I feel like we always play better at home. I think we were the better team on the field for most of tonight."
  • "Down 4-0, we were trying to keep a positive mindset. I knew that any of us could score and get us back in the game. There was still a good amount of time left, so we knew we could get something out of it."
