UCLA Wins Defensive Bout With Terps 20-17

The Terps turned the Bruins over thrice, but fell in the final seconds to UCLA on the road.

PASADENA, CA — UCLA's fourth-quarter rally gave the Bruins their third straight win and led to Maryland falling on the road for the first time all season, 20-17 in the Rose Bowl on Saturday night. The Bruins (3-4, 3-1 Big Ten) used 13 points in the fourth quarter to overcome a trio of turnovers and a late Maryland scoring drive.

Facing a 17-10 deficit late in the fourth quarter, Malik Washington led his Terrapins 75 yards in just 84 seconds to tie the contest, finding Jalil Farooq in the end zone to tie the contest with seconds remaining in the Rose Bowl on Saturday night. The Bruins, however, would deal the night's final blow, hitting a 23-yard field goal in the final seconds to seal their third straight win.

The Terps got the scoring started early in the second quarter with a Sean O'Haire 24-yard field goal that capped off a 17-play, 88-yard scoring drive that lasted over eight minutes and put Maryland ahead.

UCLA quickly responded with a 55-yard rushing touchdown, putting the Bruins ahead after punting on their first offensive possessions. A Huskey interception — Maryland's nation-leading 13th of the season — late in the second quarter prevented the Bruins from adding on before the half, but UCLA took a 7-3 advantage into the break.

When the Terps needed a spark, they turned again to their stout defense. Glasker picked off Nico Iamaleava and returned it eight yards for Maryland's fourth defensive touchdown of the season to take a 10-7 lead.  The following UCLA drive looked promising before Stewart got to Iamaleava and forced a fumble. The Bruins, however, scored a go-ahead touchdown with 3:33 left in the contest to regain a 14-10 lead.  Washington was intercepted plays later on a ball off his receiver's hands, allowing UCLA to take a seven-point lead with a 42-yard field goal.

Washington took over from there, marching his offense down the field, picking up crucial yards with his legs and connecting with Farooq in the end zone to tie the contest.

UCLA's game-winning field goal iced the game.

Terrapin punter Bryce McFerson played a large role in flipping the field on Saturday, dropping a career-high five punts inside the 20-yard line and tallying three punts of 50+ yards.

The Maryland defense limited Iamaleava to just 221 passing yards and two interceptions on Saturday as the Bruins' offense struggled to move the ball against the Terrapins. Maryland forced four 3-and-outs and three turnovers, but UCLA overcame its miscues and outlasted the Terps.
