No. 8 Maryland Uses Early Goal To Snag 4-0 Win Over Ohio State

Laurin Mack joined elite company on Saturday as the Terps remained unbeaten in 2025.

COLUMBUS, OH — The last time Maryland posted four straight shutouts was in the 2018 NCAA Tournament en route to a national championship. The No. 8 Terps (9-0-3, 5-0-2 Big Ten) did it again on Saturday, defeating Ohio State (5-8, 2-5 Big Ten) 4-0 on the road.

It took the Terps just 46 seconds to get started on Saturday as Joseph Umberto Picotto found his second goal of the year in the first minute of action. The Buckeyes thought they'd made a save on his shot, but the ball fully crossed the line and the Terps took the early lead on their fastest goal since 2011. They wouldn't surrender their quick advantage as Laurin Mack continued his remarkable sophomore season. He made three saves to bring his season total to 42 — good for second in the Big Ten — while posting his fourth straight shutout, something a Maryland goalkeeper hasn't done in six seasons.

The lead doubled in the 67th minute as Sadam Masereka scored on a penalty kick for his fifth goal of the season. He drew a foul on a scoring chance and made the most of his opportunity from the spot to put the Terps up 2-0. Another insurance goal came in the 76th minute by the way of Kenny Quist-Therson's first goal of the season as Umberto Picotto picked up an assist. A free kick found Quist-Therson amongst chaos in front of the net to ice Maryland's ninth victory of the season. Henry Bernstein joined the scoring party in the 86th minute with his second goal of 2025 as Rocket Ritarita collected an assist. Bernstein gave Maryland its fourth goal of a match for the fourth time this season.
With the win, Maryland remains unbeaten through 12 matches for the first time since 2017. The Terps' 2025 campaign continues to be a statistical masterpiece and they'll bring their train of momentum back to College Park for another ranked battle with the No. 20 Hoosiers on Oct. 24. for a celebration of the 2005 National Championship Team's 20th Anniversary Reunion.

  • "Joseph's a special player. He was in and out at the beginning of the year, but he's now at full strength and he's making a difference. He's a competitor. He gets in the box and can strike a good ball, so he's been a huge asset."
