PHILADELPHIA, PA – Maryland linebacker
Daniel Wingate has been added to the Chuck Bednarik Award Watch List, the Maxwell Football Club announced today.
The Bednarik Award is given annually to the most outstanding defensive player in college football. Wingate is one of six additions to the watch list, joining Quincy Rhodes Jr. of Arkansas, Hezekiah Masses of California, Mansoor Delane of LSU, Josiah Trotter of Missouri, Aamaris Brown of UNLV and John Henry Daley of Utah.
Wingate, who is already on the watch list for the Butkus Award given to the nation's best linebacker, is currently tied for first in the Big Ten with 6.0 solo tackles per game and his 39 total tackles ranks fourth most in the conference.
A junior from Bowie, Wingate led the Terps with 11 tackles, 1.0 sacks, 1.5 tackles for loss and a quarterback hurry in Maryland's win at Wisconsin. That stat line garnered him Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week accolades.
Semifinalists for the Bednarik Award will be announced on November 11 with the winner announced as part of the ESPN Home Depot College Football Awards Show held on December 11.
Wingate and the Terps return to action on Saturday, Oct. 4 against Washington. The game is set to kickoff at 3:30 p.m. and will air on Big Ten Network and the Maryland Sports Radio Network.
