SPRINGFIELD, MA -- Senior Mir McLean of the 10th-ranked Maryland women's basketball team was named to the Katrina McClain Watch List Thursday by the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame.
The Katrina McClain Award, now in its ninth year, recognizes the top power forwards in women's NCAA Division I college basketball. It is named after the two-time All-American, 1987 National Player of the Year, and Class of 2012 Hall of Famer.
McLean saw action in all 33 games for the Terrapins last year, averaging 4.1 points and 4.3 rebounds. In the Terps' NCAA Tournament run to the Sweet Sixteen, she averaged 6.0 points and 6.0 rebounds. She scored eight points with 10 rebounds in the Terps' double-overtime win over Alabama in the second round.
The Terrapins were predicted to finish No. 2 in the Big Ten, behind just UCLA. Seniors Yarden Garzon and Kaylene Smikle were named to the 10-player All-Big Ten Preseason Team.
Maryland returns All-Big Ten honorees Smikle, Bri McDaniel and starter Saylor Poffenbarger.
Head coach Brenda Frese and her staff signed two transfers in All-Big Ten honoree Yarden Garzon (Indiana) and 2025 ACC Tournament Most Outstanding Player Oluchi Okananwa (Duke). The Terrapins also welcome freshmen Lea Bartelme, Addi Mack, Rainey Welson, Nicole Fritea and Marya Boiko to the roster.
The Terrapins will host Division II Point Park Thursday at 6 p.m. at the XFINITY Center. Admission is free and the game will be streamed on B1G+.
Maryland will officially open the season Monday, Nov. 3 with a 7 p.m. matchup vs. Loyola (Md.) at the XFINITY Center. Tickets for Monday's game are available here and it will be streamed on B1G+.
