Maryland picked up its first home win of the season as Pharrel Payne recorded his eighth-career 20+ point performance.

COLLEGE PARK, MD — Maryland led wire-to-wire in its 84-64 victory over Alcorn State (0-4) as the Terps (2-1) picked up their first home win of the season at the XFINITY Center on Tuesday night.

Pharrel Payne led the Terps with 22 points and seven rebounds in his 99th career game. Andre Mills also added 16 points on a trio of threes in the win. Four Terps finished in double-figures as Maryland stayed unbeaten all-time against the Braves.

The Terps held Alcorn State scoreless for a nearly seven-minute period in the first half while they went on a 13-0 run to put the contest out of question early. The run was Maryland's second of 10+ points of the season and put the Terps ahead 20-7 at the 11:12 mark in the first half. The extended run expanded to 22-3 as Maryland claimed a 29-10 lead late in the first half.

Maryland took a moment at halftime to recognize those that have served in the United State Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, Space Force and Coast Guard on a night where the Terps honored veterans and active military members.

The Terps used another big run early in the second half to ice the win. Maryland scored 15 of the frame's first 17 points in a stretch that included another 9-0 run as the Terps held Alcorn State without a field goal for over five minutes.

Maryland worked the Braves under the hoop, outrebounding Alcorn State 37-25 and picking up 34 points in the paint. The Terp scored 26 points on 21 forced turnovers in their 20-point win.

How It Happened:

Payne got the scoring started with a layup in the opening minute.
Isaiah Watts created an early three-point play.
David Coit hit the Terps' first three of the night to build a five-point lead.
An ally-oop from Darius Adams to Payne put Maryland up 18-7.
A 13-0 Terps run put UMD ahead 20-7 at the 11:12 mark of the opening half.
Mills drained a three-pointer to get the Terps to the 25-point mark.
Another 7-0 run ballooned the lead to 29-10.
Payne picked up his 10th points of the night with a pair of free throws just 12 minutes into the contest.
Maryland took a 33-27 lead into the break as Payne recorded 14 first-half points.

After his 22-point performance on Tuesday, Payne sits just 21 away from 1,000–career points in his illustrious college career.
Payne marked his fourth 20-point game since last season's NCAA Tournament. He scored 25 points against Yale, 26 points against Michigan, 21 points this year against Coppin State, and 22 on Tuesday against Alcorn State.
