Maryland Men’s Soccer Dominates Big Ten Postseason Awards

COLLEGE PARK, MD -- Maryland men's soccer was well represented in the Big Ten Postseason Awards, collecting six All-Big Ten First Team selections, one Second Team nod, two All-Freshman honors, and three major awards.

The six First Team selections mark a new program record, surpassing the previous high of five from 2016 — Maryland's last undefeated regular season. The Terps' major award winners included Lasse Kelp (Defensive Player of the Year), Laurin Mack (Goalkeeper of the Year), and Sasho Cirovski (Coach of the Year). Luca Costabile also earned Maryland's Big Ten Sportsmanship Award.

Senior defender Lasse Kelp was the cornerstone of one of the nation's top defensive units, playing all 1,350 minutes this regular season — the full 90 in every match. Maryland led the Big Ten in goal differential and posted shutouts in 50% of its games, allowing just 12 goals in the regular season, the second-best mark in the league. Kelp added one goal and two assists, including a crucial 85th-minute equalizer at Penn State. The German native earned one Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week honor and becomes the third Terp ever to win Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year.

Sophomore Laurin Mack was stellar between the posts, recording eight shutouts in 15 regular-season matches — ranking 16th nationally and tied for first in the Big Ten. Mack claimed three Big Ten Goalkeeper of the Week honors, including two during a stretch of four straight conference shutouts. He finished the regular season with a 0.88 goals-against average and 48 saves, becoming just the second Terp to win Big Ten Goalkeeper of the Year.

Head coach Sasho Cirovski earned Big Ten Coach of the Year after guiding Maryland to its first undefeated regular season since 2016. The Terps ranked among the nation's top programs statistically — placing in the top three nationally in scoring offense, assists per game, points per game, and win-loss-tie percentage. The honor is Cirovski's third Big Ten Coach of the Year award since Maryland joined the conference in 2014.

Maryland's record-setting six First Team selections were Luca Costabile, Lasse Kelp, Leon Koehl, Laurin Mack, Sadam Masereka, and Stephane Njike. Luca Costabile (also Maryland's Big Ten Sportsmanship Award recipient) was a key presence on the back line, contributing two goals and one assist in 15 matches. Leon Koehl, an All-Big Ten First Team pick for the second straight season, recorded three goals and three assists in 13 games and earned one Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week honor. Sadam Masereka, Maryland's leading scorer, tallied nine goals and three assists, highlighted by a first-half hat trick in the regular season finale at Michigan State — the Terps' first hat trick since 2017 and first in one half since 2005. Stephane Njike matched Masereka with 21 total points (seven goals, seven assists) while leading the team with four game-winning goals.

Albi Ndrenika earned a spot on the All-Big Ten Second Team after an impressive season that included a team-best eight assists and three goals. The Olney, Md. native netted two game-winners, including the decisive goal in a 1–0 win over Washington that helped secure the Big Ten Championship.

Freshmen Rocket Ritarita and Farouk Cisse were named to the Big Ten All-Freshman Team. Ritarita recorded two goals and five assists across 14 matches (three starts), while Cisse added a goal and an assist as part of Maryland's standout defensive unit.

With a record six First Team selections, multiple major individual awards, and an undefeated regular season, the 2025 Terps reaffirmed their place among the nation's elite programs — a testament to the depth, consistency, and championship standard of Maryland men's soccer.
