No. 9 Maryland Stays Perfect With 88-70 Win Over Towson

Kaylene Smikle returned to be one of five Terps in double figures as they improved to 4-0.

COLLEGE PARK, MD — The No. 9 Terps improved to 4-0 for the third time in the past five seasons with an 88-70 win over Towson (2-2) on Thursday night at the XFINITY Center. 

All the stars were out and firing in full effect as Maryland surpassed the 80-point mark for the fourth time in 2025, marking the first time the Terps have opened a season with four 80-point performances since the 2021-22 season. 

Kaylene Smikle made her season debut and recorded 13 points and five rebounds in 13 minutes of action. Yarden Garzon led the charge from behind the three-point line, hitting two of Maryland's seven shots from deep range as a part of her 10-point night.  With 10 points and a team-high eight rebounds on Thursday, Oluchi Okananwa reached double-digits for the fourth in as many games in 2025. Addi Mack followed her 23-point performance against Georgetown up with 15 points and six assists against the Tigers. The Terps played a clean defensive game, not allowing the Tigers to shoot a free throw until the third quarter and relenting just nine overall attempts. Maryland outrebounded Towson 52-24 and forced 18 turnovers in the in-state showdown. How it Happened:
1st Quarter:
  • An Ozzy-Momodu jumper got the night's scoring started. 
  • Garzon drained an early three as Maryland opened a 9-2 lead. 
  • A Mir McLean layup put the Terps ahead 15-8 late in the quarter.
  • Okananwa had six points as Maryland took a 23-13 lead into the second quarter.
2nd Quarter:
  • Maryland went on an 11-0 run that spanned across the first two quarters. 
  • Smikle turned a layup into a three-point play for her first points of the year in her season debut. 
  • The Terps opened the quarter on a 10-2 run.
  • Okananwa broke into double-digits with a layup with two minutes remaining in the half. 
  • Saylor Poffenbarger hit a three-pointer to put Maryland up 25 late in the quarter. 
  • Mack rolled a last-second layup in as the Terps took a 51-23 lead into the half.
3rd Quarter:
  • Smikle hit her first three of the season to put Maryland up 60-32.
  • She drained another bucket from deep as the Terps took a 63-37 lead. 
  • Maryland took a 68-46 lead into the fourth quarter.
4th Quarter:
  • Poffenbarger started the quarter with a three-point basket. 
  • A Mack layup put Maryland up 77-56 with six minutes to play. 
  • A pair of free throws from Breanna Williams put Maryland over the 80-point threshold. 
  • Maryland went on to win 88-70.
Double-Digit Dominance:
  • Smikle (13 points) reached double-digit scoring for the first time this season and the 69th time in her career. 
  • Addi Mack (15 points) earned her second double-digit performance on Thursday to add to her freshman season. She scored a career-high 23 points in the Terps' win over Georgetown.
  • Okananwa (10 points) has finished in double-figures in each game this season and 40 times in her career.
  • Garzon (10 points) tallied 10+ points for the second time this season and for the 66th time in her career. 
  • Williams (10 points) recorded her first-career night with double-figure scoring in the win.
Taking On Towson:
  • Thursday's game featured the 26th all-time meeting between Maryland and the Tigers with the Terps winning 20 of the previous matchups.
  • Maryland improved to 8-0 over Towson at the XFINITY Center and 11-1 in the Brenda Frese Era. 
  • With the win, the Terps bumped their winning streak over Towson to 11 games dating back to 2010.
  • Maryland's largest win over the Tigers came in a 107-51 win in 1991.
  • The two teams have now played in four straight seasons.
  • Towson head coach Laura Harper played at Maryland under Brenda Frese from 2005-08. She was the 2006 Final Four Most Outstanding Player and helped the Terps to the 2006 NCAA Championship.
Home Sweet Home:
  • The Terps are 624-146 (.810) all-time in College Park, dating back to the inaugural 1971-72 season.
  • Maryland is 330-51 (.866) at home under Brenda Frese, whose first season in College Park was the inaugural season of XFINITY Center. That makes the Terps' home among the top 10 toughest places to play in the country.
  • The Terrapins are 184-12 (.938) all-time in non-conference games in XFINITY Center.
  • The Terps won 48 straight home games starting Nov. 9, 2007 with a 76-52 season-opening win over Princeton. The streak ended on Jan. 21, 2010 with an 80-77 loss to Miami.
