Terps Fall To No. 8 Alabama In Late-Night Loss

Maryland’s time in Las Vegas ended with a loss to a talented Crimson Tide squad.

LAS VEGAS, NV — Maryland's (5-3) time in the Geico Players Era Championship Tournament ended with a 105-72 loss to No. 8 Alabama late in the night in Las Vegas.

The Crimson Tide (5-2) hit five of their first seven shots from three-point range to jump ahead in the early minutes and rode their advantage to a late-night win in Sin City. Labaron Philon led Alabama with 20 points and Aden Holloway recorded a double-double on Wednesday night.

Darius Adams continued his impressive start to his freshman season with a career-high 20 points (5-of-7 from three), three rebounds and a steal on Wednesday.  Adams has scored in double figures in each of his last six games.
Pharrel Payne had another solid night with 14 points, marking the 50th time in his career that he's tallied 10+ points. He's contributed double-digit scoring in all seven games he's played in this season. Maryland got some timely threes from Aleks Alston and Guillermo Del Pino, who both tallied career-high points, but the Crimson Tide came away with the win in the final game of the Geico Players Era Championship Tournament.
How It Happened:
1st Half:
  • David Coit rolled in a layup for Maryland's first points of the night. 
  • Alabama hit a trio of threes in the opening three minutes to build an early lead. 
  • Adams hit Maryland's first three of the night. 
  • Isaiah Watts and Payne got on the board midway through the period. 
  • Adams hit another three heading into a timeout. 
  • Alabama created a substantial run as the lead swelled. 
  • Alston hit his second-career three. 
  • Maryland scored seven straight to cut into the deficit. 
  • Alabama led 49-29 at the half.
2nd Half:
  • Adams hit a layup for the first points of the half.
  • Adams reached double figures early in the half. 
  • Payne followed suit, scoring his 10th points of the night in the opening minutes.
  • Alston added his second basket of the night.
  • Del Pino got on the board with a long three.
  • Del Pino hit a second three minutes later to start 2-for-2 from range. 
  • Alston hit a second three to mark a new career high in points. 
  • The Crimson Tide put the game out of reach with an 11-0 run late in the night. 
  • Adams hit back-to-back threes in the final minutes. 
  • Alabama won the contest 105-72.
Double-Digit Days:
  • Adams (20 points) has scored in double figures in seven of Maryland's eight games this season. 
  • Payne (14 points) has tallied double-digits in all seven games he's played in this season and 50 times in his career.
  • Del Pino recorded his first-career double-digit day with a career-high 10 points.
Against Alabama:
  • Wednesday's matchup was the eighth all-time meeting between the Terps and the Tide, with Maryland winning four of the previous seven games.
  • Five of the eight meetings have come at neutral sites. Maryland has won every true home or away game in the series. 
Up Next:
  • The Terps return home to take on Wagner on Dec. 2. Tipoff is slated for 8 PM and the game will air on the Big Ten Network.
