No. 7 Maryland Grabs 95-38 Thanksgiving Win Over Hofstra

The Terps got points from 12 different players en route to a 9-0 start.

CAROLINA, PR — The No. 7 Terps picked up a hearty 95-38 Thanksgiving win over Hofstra in the Discover Puerto Rico Classic on Thursday afternoon. Maryland feasted on the Pride (1-4) to improve to 9-0 for a second straight season and the eighth time under Brenda Frese.

Maryland opened the contest with a 10-0 run and never looked back, carving its way to a win. Kaylene Smikle added to her strong week with 13 points, three rebounds and 6-of-6 shooting from the charity stripe to mark her fifth double-digit performance of the season. The Terps had 12 different players get on the board on Thursday as they shot 58.2% (32-of-55) from the floor. Marya Boiko had a big day with a career-high 10 points on 5-of-5 shooting in the win.

The Terps used a series of substantial runs to ensure the contest was never in question. Maryland got in the spirit of giving, dishing 22 assists in the win as Addi Mack marked another double-digit game.  Maryland won its first-ever contest with Hofstra as the Terps eclipsed the 80-point mark for the eighth time this season. Their defense was stout, creating 24 turnovers that turned into 39 points while holding Hofstra to 41 points in Maryland's final game in the Discover Puerto Rico Classic.

How It Happened:
1st Quarter:
  • Smikle hit a three for the game's first points.
  • Saylor Poffenbarger added a three as Maryland opened a 10-0 run to start the game. 
  • Yarden Garzon hit her first three midway through the period. 
  • The Terps used another 9-0 run to build a 19-2 lead in the opening minutes. 
  • Mir McLean got on the board by creating a three-point play out of a layup.
  • Smikle had seven first-quarter points as Maryland led 29-6 after the first quarter of action.
2nd Quarter:
  • Boiko scored a quick four points for her first buckets of the afternoon.
  • The Terps went on another 10-0 lead early in the second quarter.
  • Mack got on the board with a three-pointer to put Maryland up 42-17.
  • Poffenbarger and Mack hit back-to-back threes during an 11-0 run late in the half.
  • Ava McKennie drained a three in the final minute. 
  • Maryland led 53-19 at the half.
3rd Quarter:
  • Maryland grabbed a 15-0 run across the end of the second quarter and the start of the third. 
  • Oluchi Okananwa hit a pair of free throws for the first points of the second half. 
  • Mack and Smikle reached double figures early in the quarter.
  • Boiko reached double digits for the first time in her career midway through the frame.
  • Garzon hit a late three.
  • Maryland led 76-28 with 10 minutes left to play.
4th Quarter:
  • McKennie hit another early three.
  • Isimenme Ozzy-Momodu reached double figures in the final quarter. 
  • Rainey Welson got the Terps to 90 points with a jumper.
  • The Terps captured the 95-38 win.
Double-Digit Dominance:
  • Smikle (13 points) reached double figures for the fifth time this season and the 73rd time in her career. 
  • Mack (10 points) posted her sixth straight double-digit performance in the Thanksgiving win.
  • Boiko reached double figures for the first time with a career-high 10 points. 
  • Ozzy-Momodu (10 points) picked up her third-career double-digit day. 
Perfect In Puerto Rico:
  • The Terps went 2-0 in the Discover Puerto Rico Classic with wins over both Hofstra and No. 16 Kentucky.
  • Maryland outscored its two opponents 169-104 on the week. 
  • Smikle led the Terps with 35 points in the tournament. 
Numbers to Know:
  • 5: The Terps had five different players (Poffenbarger, Ozzy-Momodu, McLean, Boiko and Breanna Williams) shoot 100% from the floor in the win.
  • 7: Maryland's defense held an opponent to single digits in a quarter for the sixth and seventh time this season as the Terps limited the Pride to six points in the first quarter and nine in the third.
