No. 4 Maryland’s Incredible Season Closes With 3-1 Loss to Washington

The Huskies defeated the Terps on Saturday to advance to the College Cup.

COLLEGE PARK, MD — The No. 4 Terps' incredible 13-2-4 season came to a close on Saturday at Ludwig Field as the Washington Huskies snagged a 3-1 win in the Elite Eight Round of the NCAA Tournament. Washington (14-6-2) found the match's final three goals to advance to the College Cup.

Maryland got on the board in the 19th minute as Henry Bernstein scored his third goal of the season in his first-career start. Chaos in front of the net placed the ball near Bernstein's head, and when the pile cleared, he emerged with icebreaking goal. Washington's Osato Enabulele scored his third goal of the season on a corner in the 38th minute to even the match at 1-1 as the two squads took a tie into the half. The Huskies got their second goal of the day in the 55th from Charlie Kosakoff to take their first lead of the afternoon.

Washington cemented its win with a third goal in the 70th minute as Alex Hall scored his fifth goal of the season. Laurin Mack made seven saves for Maryland on Saturday, but Washington escaped Ludwig Field and its 4,054 attendance with a 3-1 victory to keep its 2025 season alive. Maryland's historic season — that featured a Big Ten Championship — came to a close. While the Terps fell short of their ultimate goal, their record six First-Team selections, multiple major individual award winners, and undefeated regular season should be celebrated and will cement this year's team in the program's rich history.  How It Happened:
1st Half:
  • Washington recorded the first shot in the eighth minute, but it sailed wide.
  • Mack came out of the net to make a timely save in the ninth minute. The Terps fought off the ensuing corner without allowing another shot.
  • Albi Ndrenika put Maryland's first shot on net, but Bowton made a diving save.
  • Sadam Masereka broke loose in the 18th minute, but his shot just missed putting Maryland on the board.
  • Bernstein scored (3) in the 19th minute on assists from Kelp (3) and Steinleitner (5) as Maryland took a 1-0 lead.
  • Washington's coach was assessed a yellow card after the goal.
  • An acrobatic series from Stephane Njike in the 30th minute produced a shot and drew a UW yellow card.
  • Washington's Enabulele evened the match in the 38th minute with a goal on its third corner of the day.
  • The Terps outshot UW 7-4 in the 1-1 first half.
2nd Half
  • Washington sailed the first shot of the half high in the 49th minute.
  • Mack made a leaping save in the 50th minute.
  • The Huskies drew another yellow card in the 55th minute.
  • Washington took a 2-1 lead with a goal in the 56th minute from Kosakoff.
  • Maryland fought off a UW corner in the 67th minute.
  • Hall scored in the 70th minute to put Washington ahead 3-1.
  • The Huskies held on for the Elite Eight win.
Sasho Cirovski's Message:
  • "The finality of this moment is very difficult, but this team is very special. They brought the Maryland style, the Maryland culture, and the Maryland pride back into our program. I'm so grateful for the season we've had."
  • "We will find a time to celebrate this season. Today, it's difficult to do that. It's hard to digest. But we will compartmentalize things and put them in the right place and we'll find a way to celebrate what was a great season."
  • "We did so many great things this year. We had some unbelievable support this year. To go undefeated in the Big Ten and to be the No. 1-ranked team at the end of the regular season and to be the highest seed left playing today is a pretty special accomplishment."
  • On his seniors: "I challenge every group to leave a legacy. I think this group will leave the legacy that they brought Maryland soccer back to the forefront of the country. They made us legitimate contenders once again. They brought a trophy to our trophy case and a lot of pride and smiles to our fans."
  • "I love being the Maryland coach. I love this program. It's a part of my DNA. It's a part of my life. I've spent over half my life as the coach of Maryland soccer."
