No. 7 Maryland Grabs Incredible 100-99 Double-Overtime Win Over Minnesota

Saylor Poffenbarger eclipsed the 1,000-career point mark in her 30-point performance

MINNEAPOLIS, MN — No. 7 Maryland rode a remarkable comeback in double-overtime to capture a 100-99 win over Minnesota in the Terps' first Big Ten game of the season. A Saylor Poffenbarger layup in the closing seconds put Maryland ahead as the Terps used a 10-0 run to capture an improbable win.  When all seemed lost in double overtime, a miraculous 8-0 run in just nine seconds put Maryland back within a point. A layup from Poffenbarger put the Terps ahead and Maryland outlasted Minnesota to capture its first overtime win on the road since 2012 and first double-OT road win in program history. Maryland is now 18-4 in overtime games under Brenda Frese. Poffenbarger made history on Sunday. Her career-high 30-point performance pushed her past the 1,000-career point mark in 120 collegiate games. She grabbed 10 rebounds for her first double-double of the season and 19th of her career in the win as Maryland rallied to capture its biggest comeback win since facing a 15-point deficit against No. 21 Alabama in last year's NCAA Tournament.  After Minnesota (6-3, 0-1 Big Ten) outscored the Terps 24-9 in the second quarter to take a 38-24 lead into the half, the Terps rallied with a 20-10 third quarter to work their way back into the contest and set up a tense finish up north. Poffenbarger scored 11 of her 30 total points in the fourth quarter to send the game to overtime. The Terps got five late points from Yarden Garzon to force a sixth frame to the tight contest.  Oluchi Okananwa contributed 25 crucial points to mark the first time this season that Maryland has had multiple 20+ scorers. Garzon contributed 15 points and seven rebounds in Maryland's impossible comeback win. Addi Mack made a trip home in her first Big Ten game of her career. The Minneapolis native recorded 16 points and eight against her hometown Golden Gophers. Mir McLean made her first start as a Terp in 43 games for Maryland after it was announced that Kaylene Smikle will miss the remainder of the season with a knee injury.
