COLLEGE PARK, MD – Maryland edge rushers
Zahir Mathis and
Sidney Stewart were both named to the 2025 On3 True Freshman All-American Team, the outlet announced Monday.
Mathis, who was also a Shaun Alexander Freshman of the Year Award semifinalist, finished his rookie season second on the team with 6.0 sacks and 8.5 tackles for loss. The Philadelphia, PA native recorded at least a partial sack in seven of the 11 games he played. Despite missing nearly two full games due to injury, Mathis still ranked 11th in the conference in total sacks. He finished second among all Power Four true freshmen with 31 total pressures according to Pro Football Focus (PFF).
Stewart finished his first collegiate season with a team-leading 7.0 sacks, tying for fifth in the conference, and recorded at least a partial sack in eight of 12 games. Stewart set the Maryland school record for tackles for loss in a season by a freshman (10.5), surpassing the previous record set in 1979. He led the team in TFLs and ranked Top 10 in the conference. Stewart led all Power Four true freshmen with 40 total pressures according to PFF.
