Queen Named Co-Big Ten Freshman of the Week, Takes Honor For Fourth Time

COLLEGE PARK, MD -- Maryland men's basketball center Derik Queen has been named the Co-Big Ten Freshman of the Week. With this honor, Queen becomes the first Terp in program history to be named the conference's freshman of the week four times.

Queen finished last week averaging 21 points 11.5 rebounds, and 3.5 assists. Queen was 12-of-23 (52.1%) from the floor across both games, adding three blocks and a pair of steals. In Maryland's game against Ohio State on Feb. 6, Queen scored 13 points with eight rebounds, two assists, two blocks, and a steal. Queen followed up that performance with a career-high 29 points and 15 rebounds against Rutgers, achieving a double-double for the seventh time this season. Queen also had five assists, becoming the first player this year in the Big Ten with 25-plus points, 10-plus rebounds, and 5-plus assists in a game. His 29 points were the most for a Maryland freshman since Diamond Stone had 39 against Penn State on Dec. 30, 2015.

Queen leads the Terps in points per game with 15.5 and is second on the team in rebounds per game with 8.5. His 8.5 rebounds per game are one of the top marks in the Big Ten, ranking sixth overall. Queen has finished with double figure points in 18 games, while finishing with double figure rebounds in nine games. Earlier this month, Queen was named to the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Center of the Year Award Midseason Top 10 list.

Queen and the Terps return to action on Thursday, as they hit the road to face Nebraska. The game is scheduled to tip-off for 8:30 p.m., with the game airing on Big Ten Network and the Maryland Sports Radio Network.
