COLLEGE PARK, MD -- Maryland opens the 2025 season in Charleston, South Carolina, as it plays in the Swig & Swine College Classic at Shipyard Park. The Terrapins will play three games over the weekend, beginning the season with a game against UAB and finishing the tournament with contests against Ball State and Mercyhurst. Due to expected weather on Sunday, the Terps will play two games on Saturday, Feb. 15 with Maryland facing Ball State at 11 a.m., and Mercyhurst at 7 p.m.

The Terps finished the 2024 campaign with a 34-22 record, led by head coach Matt Swope in his first season at the helm. The Terps return many of their key contributors from a season ago, with Eddie Hacopian, Chris Hacopian, Elijah Lambros, and others back for 2025. 2023 Big Ten Freshman Team selection Kyle McCoy returns after missing the 2024 season due to injury and looks to slot in as one of the team's weekend starters. The pitching side also returns key veterans in Logan Koester (six wins in 2024), Omar Melendez (five wins in 2024), and Joey McMannis.

New Faces In College Park
  • The Terps have multiple transfers expected to play big roles in 2025. The team brought in seven transfers during the offseason that will be pivotal parts to its season.
  • Hollis Porter slots in a first base for the Terps this season. Porter transfers in from Pearl River Community College where he finished 2024 with a .399 average with 20 home runs and 73 RBI. Porter's 20 homerun season is the most in a single-season in Pearl River CC history, while his 73 RBI are the second-most all-time. Aden Hill will patrol right-field for Maryland after transferring in from VCU. Hill finished last season with a .276 average with six homers and 44 RBI as he helped lead the Rams to an Atlantic 10 Championship and their third NCAA berth in the last four seasons.
  • On the pitching side, look for a quartet of arms to contribute for the Terps. Andrew Koshy (Wake Forest) and Jack Wren (Marist) will look to provide late-inning depth to the Terps bullpen, while Brayden Ryan (Merrimack) and Devin Milberg (Dartmouth) bring unique skill sets to the pitching staff. Wren was named by D1Baseball as one of its top 50 impact transfer pitchers after finishing 2024 with a 2-1 record with a 3.60 ERA and 48 strikeouts over 50 innings at Marist.

Terps Earn Perfect Game Preseason Honors
  • Three Terps were featured on Perfect Game's 2025 Preseason Honors list by class. Eddie Hacopian, Chris Hacopian, and Kyle McCoy each represented the Terrapins on the preseason lists.
  • Eddie Hacopian was named the #34 collegiate senior by Perfect Game. Eddie is coming off his best year as a Terp, finishing with a .377 average with nine homers and 51 RBI last season.
  • Chris Hacopian was named the 71st-ranked collegiate junior. This comes after a stellar freshman season which saw the Potomac-native earn freshman all-American honors and have one of the best seasons in program history.
  • Kyle McCoy closes out the list as he was named the 90th-ranked collegiate junior. McCoy returns in 2025 after missing the 2024 season due to injury. In 2023, McCoy earned Big Ten All-Freshman honors after finishing with a 4-6 record and 39 strikeouts.
  • Hollis Porter was named to the Perfect Game Preseason All-Big Ten Team at designated hitter Porter was joined on the All-Conference Team by Chris Hacopian, who was included as a middle infielder.
Kyle McCoy
The Hacopian Bros.
  • The duo of Eddie and Chris Hacopian return in 2025, both coming off special seasons last year.
  • In his junior season, Eddie Hacopian finished the season with a .377 batting average with nine home runs and 51 RBI. Eddie was fourth in the Big Ten in both batting average and hits (83) a season ago. Following a successful junior campaign, Eddie earned First Team All-Big Ten honors and was named Second Team All-East Region by the ABCA.
  • The tradition of awarding the #3 jersey at Maryland continued this year, as Eddie Hacopian was named the team's captain and will wear the #3 jersey in 2025. The #3 is a huge honor for whoever is given the number for a given season as it embodies the three pillars of Maryland Baseball: toughness, ownership, and growth mindset.
  • Chris Hacopian had one of the best freshman season in Maryland history. Chris finished his first season in college baseball with a .323 average and added 15 home runs and 42 RBI. Chris earned Second Team Freshman All-American accolades from D1Baseball, Baseball America, and Perfect Game, becoming the first Terp to earn freshman all-American honors since Matt Shaw in 2021. In addition to those national honors, Chris was named Second Team All Big Ten and to the Big Ten All-Freshman Team. Chris's 15 home runs were the second-most in program history for a freshman, tied with Maxwell Costes who hit 15 in 2019. His 42 RBI in 2024 tied Brandon Lowe for the fourth-most in program history.

Working For The Weekend
  • The Terps head into the 2025 season with a new-look weekend rotation. The squad begins the campaign with the trio of Kyle McCoy, Joey McMannis, and Evan Smith
  • McCoy returns in 2025 after missing the 2024 with an injury. McCoy finished his freshman season in 2023 with a 4-6 record with 39 strikeouts, earning Big Ten All-Freshman Team honors for his efforts. McCoy added 20 pounds of muscle heading into the 2025 season, no checking in at 205. McCoy also added a new breaking ball to his repertoire. McCoy also added a four-seam fastball to pair with his two-seam.
  • Joey McMannis heads into his sophomore campaign after making 10 starts in 2024. Like his rotation mate McMannis also transformed his body in the offseason, dropping to 225 pounds while adding muscle and leaning out his frame.  McMannis tweaked his splitter in the offseason to make the pitch more effective against both right and left handed hitters. McMannis also added a four-seam fastball in the offseason, pairing the pitch with the sinker and two-seam he featured last season.
  • Evan Smith makes the move to the rotation after pitching out of the bullpen last season. Keeping a recurring theme with his fellow pitchers Smith reshaped his body, shedding weight to help with movement and an increase in workload. Smith added a two-seam sinker to pair with his four-seamer, while also adding a sweeper  from his low-slot delivery that will pair well with his slider and changeup. Smith got extended starting experience over the summer with the Bethesda Big Train in the Ripken League to prepare for the increased workload ahead of the upcoming season.

Continuing a Family Tradition
  • Brayden Martin was an important piece for the Terps in his first season in College park a season ago. Martin finished 2024 playing in 55 games with 51 starts, batting .266 with a home run and 24 RBI.
  • This season Martin switched to #42, following in the footsteps of his uncle Walt Williams who wore the #42 while starring for the Maryland's men's basketball program from 1988-92.
  • Williams finished his Maryland career with 1,704 points, which is the 13th-most in program history. "The Wizard", as he is known in College Park, was a finalist for the Wooden and Naismith Player of the Year Awards as a senior, averaging 26.8 points per game. Following his playing days at Maryland, Williams was selected with the seventh pick in the 1992 NBA Draft by Sacramento and went on to play 11 season in the NBA.

  • The Terrapins' pitching staff will feature several freshman pitchers who are expected to add to an already improved pitching staff from a season ago. The group includes the likes of Jake Yeager, Cristofer Cespedes, Logan Hastings, and Ryan Bailey
  • Yeager comes to College Park as the #84 pitcher in the nation and the top-ranked player in the state of Maryland according to Perfect Game. Yeager was also named the 2024 Maryland Gatorade Pitcher of the Year while pitching at Archbishop Spalding. With the addition of Yeager, the Terps have signed the last three Gatorade Player of the Year honorees in Maryland (Chris Hacopian in 2022 & Joey McMannis in 2023).
  • Cespedes was also one of the top high school pitching prospects nationally, ranking as the #218 player in the country and #1 pitcher in New York by Perfect Game. Cespedes should provide serious velocity to the Terps staff, having a fastball clocked as high as 97 MPH at North Rockland High School.
