COLLEGE PARK, MD -- Maryland opens its 52nd season of women's lacrosse in 2025. The Terps are ranked No. 7 in the preseason Inside Lacrosse media poll and are ninth in the US Lacrosse rankings after 2025's first official week of play. The Terrapins open 2025 at home against No. 6 Syracuse (1-0) at the Field Hockey and Lacrosse Complex.
 
Where We've Been
  • The Terps are coming off a positive 2024 campaign, that saw Cathy Reese's squad earn an NCAA Quarterfinals appearance. The Terrapins finished 2024 with a 14-6 overall record.
  • Chrissy Thomas is the Terps' leading returning scorer with 45 points on 18 goals and a returning-best 27 assists. Kori Edmonson, a preseason second team All-American, is the leading returning goal-scorer with 38 goals. Overall, Maryland returns just 34.8% of its goal-scoring (86 of 247 goals), 38.3% of its assists (46 of 120 assists), and 35.97% of its total points (132 of 376 points) from 2024.
  • The Terrapins will also have to find a primary draw taker to replace graduated Shayla Ahearn, who led the team with 111 draw controls last season. The returning Terps have a combined 25 draw control wins from 2024.
  • Maryland will also have to replace its starting goalie with the graduation of All-American Emily Sterling. Sterling started 19 of 20 games in 2024 and played 88.95% of the team's minutes in net.
Series history vs. The Orange
  • This will be Maryland and Syracuse's 28th meeting all-time, with the Terps holding a 24-3 (.889) advantage.
  • The two teams have split the last four meetings with each holding a 2-2 record, including a road win for each school. Maryland's last two wins over the Orange have come in OT (12-11 at home in 2019 and 9-8 at Syracuse in 2024).
  • Maryland has won 13 of the last 15 against the Orange dating back to 2012, including wins in the 2013, 2015, and 2016 National Semifinals and a 15-12 win in the 2014 National Championship. The Terps and Orange met in every season from 2009-2020.
  • Syracuse is 1-0 in Kayla Treanor's second season at the helm of the Orange program following a dominating 21-9 win over Albany on Feb. 7, in the JMA Wireless Dome. Olivia Adamson led the way offensively with six points (3g, 3a), while Emma Ward (3g-2a=5pts) and Emma Muchnick (3g-0a=3pts) also had hat tricks. Daniella Guyette made her first career start in net for the Orange and picked up the win with three saves and six goals allowed for a 7.20 GAA and a .333 save percentage.
Season Openers
  • Maryland is 41-10 (.804) all-time in season openers, dating back to the first varsity season in 1974.
  • Under head coach Cathy Reese, the Terrapins have a 17-1 (.944) record in season openers. The lone blemish came in 2021, when they lost 15-13 at Penn State. Maryland is 7-0 in season openers at home under Reese.  
  • This marks the first time Maryland has played the Orange in a season opener.

Dominance Under Reese
  • Head Coach Cathy Reese is in her 19th season at the helm of Maryland women's lacrosse. The winningest coach in program history, Reese is 331-47 (.876) as head coach and has led the Terps to five National Championships, 12 Final Fours and 22 Conference Championships.
  • Reese is the fifth all-time winningest active head coach and the sixth-winningest coach of all-time in Division 1 women's lacrosse at 361-76 .826). Former Maryland head coach Cindy Timchal is the all-time winningest women's lacrosse coach with 578 wins.
  • Reese has the highest winning percentage of any current Maryland head coach as a Terrapin head coach.
