No. 17 Terps Fall To Huskers, 91-71

COLLEGE PARK, MD – Despite Shyanne Sellers' game-high 23 points, No. 17 Maryland women's basketball was defeated by Nebraska, 91-71, on Thursday at XFINITY Center. The Terps are now 19-6 overall and 9-5 in Big Ten action. 

Sellers made her first five shots from the floor, including a pair of 3-pointers, and finished the first half with 19 points. Maryland entered the locker room tied with Nebraska at 45 apiece. However, the Huskers outscored the Terps 46-26 in the second half to come away with the victory. Nebraska shot an impressive 12-21 (57%) from beyond the three-point line for the game.  

The senior point guard added four assists and three rebounds for another signature all-around performance. She finished her night shooting 9-of-15 (60%) from the field. It was her fifth game this season with 20 or more points.   
  Other standout performers were Allie Kubek (nine points, four rebounds and two assists), Kaylene Smikle (eight points, three rebounds, three assists and two steals), Saylor Poffenbarger (eight points, five rebounds, two blocks and two steals), Emily Fisher (eight points, two rebounds and two assists) and Christina Dalce (eight points and five rebounds). 

Nebraska improved to 17-8 overall and 8-6 in Big Ten play. The Huskers were led by six double-digit scorers, including Alexis Markowski (20 points and 11 rebounds), Alberte Rimdal (15 points), Britt Prince (13 points), Jessica Petrie (11 points), Logan Nissley (11 points) and Callin Hake (10 points). 

This was Maryland's annual Play 4 Kay Pink Game to support breast cancer awareness. 
 

Breaking Down The Action
  • The Terps led 15-6 at the first media timeout that occurred at the 4:52 mark in the first quarter. Shyanne Sellers had 12 of Maryland's points, starting 5-of-5 from the floor with two made 3-pointers. 
  • Maryland held a 29-18 advantage at the end of the first quarter. Sarah Te-Biasu and Saylor Poffenbarger added 3-pointers to close out the frame. 
  • Nebraska cut the lead to five at 36-31 at 3:56 in the second quarter media timeout. It did its damage in the paint, where 20 of its points were scored. 
  • The Huskers took the lead. However, Emily Fisher's 3-pointer seconds before the buzzer sounded tied the game at 45 apiece at halftime. 
  • Maryland trailed 61-53 at the 4:39 media timeout in the third. Three Huskers were in double figures, and they were in the middle of a 7-0 run.
  • The Huskers stretched their lead to 20 points (81-61) at 7:10 in the fourth with a driving layup by Alberte Rimdal.

  • Shyanne Sellers scored 23 points, recording her 86th career game in double figures. She has scored double-figures in 19 games this season.

  • Shyanne Sellers eclipsed 1,500 career points this season, becoming one of just 18 players in program history to reach that milestone.    
  • Sellers moved to 16th on the program's all-time scoring list with 1548. She passed Deanna Tate (1,541 from 1986-89). Next on the list is Tianna Hawkins (1,595 from 2010-13). 
  • The point guard is also fifth on the all-time assists list, having 496 in her career. She's closing in on Tate, who dished out 500 dimes from (1986-89).

  • 5: Sellers is fifth on the program's all-time assists list. 
  • 4: Sellers need four assists to eclipse 500 career dimes and become the only player in program history with 1,500 points, 500 rebounds and 500 assists.
  • 17: Maryland is ranked No. 17 in the Associated Press poll.
  • 17: Sellers scored 20 or more points for the 17th time in her career and the fifth time this season. 
  • 1,500: Sellers is one of just 18 players in program history to reach 1,500 career points.
