Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

No. 21 Worldwide Terps Run The Night, Defeating Michigan, 85-77

COLLEGE PARK, MD – No. 21 Maryland women's basketball and its fans had the time of their lives as they yelled "Dale!" after the Terps downed Michigan, 85-77, on Mr. Worldwide night — a Pitbull-themed game — at a JUMPIN XFINITY Center on Monday. The Terps danced again into the win column, improving to 20-6 overall and 10-5 in Big Ten action. This was head coach Brenda Frese's 20th 20-win season in her 23 seasons at Maryland.

The Terps gave everything tonight as they were in a now-or-never situation. They trailed by as many as 10 points early in the second quarter but were feeling this moment as they went on a 13-1 run spanning late in the second frame to early in the third. The run gave the Terps a 44-41 lead at the 9:06 mark, which was their first lead since 5:28 in the first. Maryland remained in control the rest of the way, as Kaylene Smikle shut it down with the dagger — a pair of free-throws to put the Terps ahead 83-77 with 11.7 seconds to play.

Sarah Te-Biasu went krazy, scoring a team-high 21 points. Buckets were going down for her, as she drilled three 3-pointers while fans were yelling "Timber." She tallied 14 of her 19 points in the second half.

Shyanne Sellers gave her teammates the greenlight all game as she dished out five dimes. Her assist at the 7:33 mark, swung to Saylor Poffenbarger in the second quarter, gave her 500 career assists. The assist also made her the first player in program history to have 1,500 points, 500 rebounds and 500 assists in a career. Sellers also said, "I'll do it," as she scored 18 points and grabbed six rebounds.

The scoring party didn't stop for Poffenbarger. She scored 12 points while grabbing six rebounds and dishing out two assists. She was HOT, shooting 5-of-9 overall on the floor.

The triple M of Terps in double figures weren't the only contributors. Smikle (nine points), Christina Dalce (nine points, six rebounds and two blocks), Mir McLean (nine points and five rebounds) and Allie Kubek (seven points and six rebounds) were other standout performers.

Michigan was messin' around and faltered to 19-7 overall and 9-6 in conference play. The Wolverines were led on offense by Olivia Olson (26 points) and Syla Swords (19 points).

From Maryland's Powerful Woman
"Really proud of our group for digging deep," Frese said. "We've really challenged this group through our practices the last couple days and fighting through fatigue. … For us to beat Michigan, they're a really, really good team, and you can see the young talent that they have, how special that freshman class is. They're a hard matchup, just given that all five players on the floor can score the basketball. But I thought we were connected on the defensive end."

Breaking Down The Action
