Trio Of Freshmen Score As No. 9 Terps Down Georgetown, 9-7

COLLEGE PARK, MD – Led by its freshmen, No. 9 Maryland women's lacrosse defeated Georgetown, 9-7, at Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex on Tuesday. The Terps are now 1-1 this season and have won the last 15 meetings with the Hoyas. 

Maryland scored four unanswered goals through the second and third quarters to build an 8-3 that the Hoyas (1-2) couldn't overcome. They brought the game within one, but freshman Kayla Gilmore scored at 4:49 in the forth to give the Terps' lead some padding. Seven Terps scored at least one goal in the match, and four of Maryland's nine goals were scored by freshmen.
   Gilmore scored two goals in the contest, as the first of her career occurred at the 3:43 mark in the second quarter and put the Terps up four scores. Emma Abbazia also scored her first career goal in the game. Her's was the game's opening score, just 38 seconds into the match. Shelby Sullivan scored a goal and notched an assist. It was her second goal of the season after scoring in the season-opener. The trio of freshmen combined for the four goals.

Kate Sites (two goals) Maisy Clevenger (one goal and one assist) and Chrissy Thomas (three assists) joined Gilmore and Sullivan, recording double-digit points. Kori Edmondson and Lauren LaPointe also notched goals. 
  

JJ Suriano made just her second career start at goalie and made 11 saves. She earned her first win between the pipes, making key saves throughout the contest. She anchored a defense that caused seven turnovers, as Edmondson, Maddy Sterling (two), Neve O'Ferrall, Kennedy Major, Annabella Schafer and Sophie Halus all finished the game with at least one. 

The Terps won
16 of 20 draw controls as a team. Gilmore won six draws to lead Maryland. Freshman Lexi Dupcak (four wins) and Edmondson (two wins) also contributed in the midfield circle. 

The Terps are 28-4 in the all-time head-to-head series against the Hoyas. The Hoyas' new head coach is a familiar face for Terrapin fans as long-time Terp assistant coach Caitlyn Phipps was hired to lead the Georgetown program in the offseason.


Breaking Down The Action
  • After the first quarter of play, Maryland took a 2-1 lead. It featured a goal 38 seconds into the game by Emma Abbazia. Her first career goal. The second goal came from Shelby Sullivan, assisted by Chrissy Thomas.
  • The Terps scored two goals to begin the quarter from Maisy Clevenger and Kori Edmondson to stretch their lead to 4-1. However, the Hoyas brought the game within one after netting two goals less than a minute apart. Before the end of the quarter, Kate Sites scored twice, and Kayla Gilmore added a tally, giving the Terps a 7-3 lead into halftime.
  • Maryland and Georgetown each scored a goal in the quarter. Lauren LaPointe scored the Terps' tally, her first of the season.
  • The Hoyas' scored three-straight goals in the fourth, to cut the Terps lead down to one at the 7:14 mark. However, Gilmore added her second goal of the game with the possession clock winding down at the  4:49 mark. Gilmore's score was the final punch to secure the Terps' victory.
Multi Terps Update
  • Kayla Gilmore (two goals) recorded her first career multi-point game.
  • Kate Sites (two goals) posted the seventh multi-point game of her career.
  • Maisy Clevenger (one goal and one assist) had her sixth multi-point game of her career. 
  • Shelby Sullivan (one goal and one assist) recorded her first career multi-point game.
  • Chrissy Thomas (four assists) had the 26th multi-point game of her career. It was her 16th game with multiple assists. 
Home Cooking 
  • Maryland is 173-12 at home under head coach Cathy Reese. It has eight undefeated home campaigns in the last 11 seasons (2013-19 and 2021).
  • The Terps have only lost two conference home games under Reese.
Dominating The Series 
  • This was Maryland and Georgetown's 32nd meeting all-time, with the Terps holding a 28-4 advantage.
  • The Terrapins have won the last 15 meetings with the Hoyas, stretching back to a 14-10 win at Georgetown on April 3, 2007. The last Hoya win in the series was 11-10 in College Park on April 5, 2006.
  • The two local squads first met in 1977, a 23-0 Terrapin shutout. The series didn't pick back up until 1995, a 17-7 Maryland road win, and the two teams have met every season since.
  • Maryland and Georgetown have met in the NCAA tournament four times, with the Terrapins holding a 3-1 advantage.
Family Ties 
  • Caitlyn Phipps is in her first year as Georgetown's head coach. 
  • Phipps served as an assistant for the Terps for 12 years, helping lead the Terps to four national championships, eight Final Fours and 14 conference championships in her 12 years on staff. 
  • She has coached six Tewaaraton winners, five National Midfielders of the Year, one National Attack Player of the Year and 13 Conference Players of the Year.
  • Phipps played for the Terps from 2007-10, garnering two IWLCA First Team All-American, two ACC Player of the Year and two ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year honors. She was also the NCAA Tournament's Most Outstanding Player in 2010, guiding Maryland to its first national title since 2001.
  • Eloise Clevenger is also the Hoyas' Director of Women's Lacrosse Operations. Clevenger 
  • She joined the staff after playing four seasons from 2021-24 for the Terps. She finished her career fourth all-time on in assists (131) and was a two-time First Team All-Big Ten honoree, as well as an IWLCA All-American.
