Terps Defeat West Georgia, 7-2

CHAPEL HILL, NC – Maryland softball defeated West Georgia, 7-2, in the Carolina Classic at Anderson Softball Stadium on Saturday evening. Maryland improved to 5-7 heading into its final game against Queens to close out its tournament play tomorrow.  

Mazie MacFarlane drove in the go-ahead run at the top of the fourth inning with a single to center field. She drove in Gracie Wilson to break the 2-2 tie. Matti Benson added two more runs in the sixth inning, singling to right field and increasing the lead to 5-2. Sydney Lewis then added an insurance run on an RBI single. The Terps' last run was scored due to a bases-loaded walk drawn by Julia Shearer

Sam Bean drove in the Terps' first two runs. She finished the night going 2-for-4 at the plate. Bean secured her first multi-RBI game in a Terps uniform. Benson, a freshman, went 2-for-4, recording the second multi-hit game of her young career. She also scored two of Maryland's runs. 

Aubrey Wurst started in the circle and pitched three innings while striking out four batters and surrendering just two runs on three hits. Keira Bucher entered in the fourth inning, making her first appearance in the circle this season. She shut out the Wolves batters in four innings pitched and struck out a career-high six batters. She earned her third career win. 

The Terps outhit the Wolves 9-4. Mariah Penta, Madison Runyan and Meghan Gray were other Terps who recorded hits. Gray recorded her first career hit. 

West Georgia fell to 3-3 on the season. It scored each of its runs in the second and third innings.

  • The Terps took an early lead, with Sam Bean belting a two-run RBI single in the game's opening inning. Walks by Mazie MacFarlane and Matti Benson set them up as runners in scoring position.
  • West Georgia trailed by one entering the third after scoring an RBI single.
  • The Wolves tied the game up, 2-2, in the bottom frame of the third.
  • MacFarlane regained the lead for Maryland, hitting an RBI single to center field in the fourth inning.
