COLLEGE PARK, MD -- Maryland returns home for its first home game of the season, hosting Delaware at Bob "Turtle" Smith Stadium. This will be the 45th meeting all-time between the Terrapins and the Blue Hens, with Maryland holding the advantage in the series with a 28-15-1 record.
The Terps traveled back to the south this past weekend, as they faced off with Western Carolina. The weekend was highlighted by a 35-run outburst on Saturday, setting a program record for runs in a single game. The Terps had 27 hits in the game as well, which is also a program record.
Record Setting Performance
Maryland scored 35 runs on 27 hits on Saturday against Western Carolina. Both totals are school records for the Terps, who currently rank third in the nations in runs per game at 13.2.
Turn Up AC
- Alex Calarco continues to be one of the top hitters not only for Maryland, but in the nation. Calarco followed up his opening weekend performance with a two home run, 12 RBI weekend against Western Carolina.
- Calarco hit a pair of grand slams in the weekend, bringing his season total to three. Calarco leads the nation with 20 RBI, and ranks second in the country in home runs with five.
- For his efforts during the weekend, Calarco was named the Golden Spikes National Player of the Week. He is the first Terp to receive the honor since Matt Shaw, who earned it for the week of May 9, 2022. Calarco was also named by D1Baseball as the top performing offensive player of the weekend.
Alex Calarco has been swinging a hot bat for the Terps to start the season. Through six games, Calarco is batting .440 and leads the country with 20 RBI. Calarco also has five home runs so far, which is the second most in Division I.
Ain't It Grand
- The Terps have been outstanding with the bases loaded, hitting six grand slams in their first six games. College records aren't available to confirm if a team has ever hit six grand slams in a six-game span. For perspective, never in Major League Baseball history since 1901, has a team hit six grand slams in a six-game span, let alone in the first six games of a season. The 2020 San Diego Padres hit five grand slams in a six-game span within a season from Aug. 17-22, 2020.
- By comparison the 2023 Maryland team which finished the year with a national-best 11 grand slams, hit a grand slam in each of their first three games and four in their first six games.
- Alex Calarco leads the pack with three grand slams this season. He is followed by Chris Hacopian, who has hit two grand slams this year. Paul Jones II hit a grand slam during Maryland's 35-12 win on Saturday, which was also his first home run of his collegiate career.
Chris Hacopian hit his second grand slam of the year on Sunday Against Western Carolina. The grand slam was the six of the season for the Terps in their first six games.
Scouting the Blue Hens
- Delaware comes into the midweek match-up after taking one of three over the Weekend against Florida International. Delaware closed out the series with a 7-6 win in extra innings for its first win of the season.
- On offense, Delaware is led by the duo of Rory Finn and Aaron Graeber. Finn leads the team in batting average at .333 with a home run and five RBI. Graeber is tied with Finn for the team lead in RBI at five, while also leading the team with three home runs and is hitting .320.
- On the pitching side the Blue Hens are led in ERA by the trio of Dylan Bryan, Mathew Minckler, and Jake Pollaro. All three pitchers have yet to allow a run this season. - The facility is named after the late Stanley Bobb, who pitched for the Terps from 1954-57. A member of the Greater Washington Jewish Sports Hall of Fame, Bobb was the starting pitcher in the dedication game at then-Shipley Field in 1954.
