Terps’ Late Inning Rally Falls Short In 13-10 Loss To Delaware

Box Score COLLEGE PARK, MD – Maryland baseball scored six runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to bring the game within one run after trailing by as many as eight. Still, it was ultimately defeated by Delaware, 13-10, in its home season opener at Bob "Turtle" Smith Stadium on Tuesday afternoon. The Terps are now 3-4 overall heading into their two-game series against Princeton.  

Delaware (2-5) broke a 3-3 tie with back-to-back four-run innings in the fifth and sixth to lead 11-3. However, Chris Hacopian gave the Terps life by driving in three of Maryland's six runs in the bottom of the eighth with a bases-clearing double to trail 11-10. However, the Blue Hens tacked on two runs in the ninth and recorded the final three outs without allowing a run. 
  Alex Calarco continued his incredible start to the season. He hit his sixth home run in Maryland's first seven games in the bottom of the second. He's tied for the nation's lead for most homers this year with New Mexico St.'s Sheehan O'Connor. It was Calarco's 18th overall of his career and 10th as a Terp. The senior went 2-for-4 overall with two runs, adding a single in the eighth.  

Aden Hill added a two-run shot in the eighth to chip into the lead. It was his first as a Terp since transferring from VCU. It was the seventh overall of the junior's career. As a team, the Terps have launched 15 home runs over its first seven games. 

Brayden Martin went 2-for-4 with two RBIs. His two-RBI single in the bottom of the second tied the game at three apiece before Delaware reclaimed its lead. Eddie Hacopian also drove in two runs, going 2-for-5 with an RBI double in the seventh and a single on a bunt with bases loaded. 

Freshman right-hander Jake Yeager made his collegiate debut on the mound. The No. 1 ranked player and pitcher in the state of Maryland by Perfect Game and PrepBaseballReport tossed four innings, striking out six batters and surrendering three runs on three hits. 

Devin Milberg, Ryan Van Buren, Logan Hastings and Jack Wren all made appearances out of the bullpen. Hastings pitched 2.2 innings, striking out six while surrendering just two runs on two hits. 
Breaking Down The Action
  • After freshman right-hander Jake Yeager struck out the second batter he faced and Alex Calarco simultaneously caught a base runner attempting to steal second base, Delaware took a 1-0 lead with a solo home run. 
  • Delaware plated two more runs in the top of the second with a two-run home run. It led 3-0.
  • Alex Calarco got the Terps on the board in the bottom of the inning with a solo home run, and Brayden Martin drove in two more runs with a single through the left side. The Terps tied the game at three apiece.
  • Delaware reclaimed the lead in the fifth, scoring four runs.
  • The blue hens added four more runs, highlighted by a three-run shot to right field leading 10-3 in the sixth.
  • Eddie Hacopian belted an RBI double to center field, cutting Delaware's lead to 11-4.
  • Maryland scored six runs in the bottom of the eight to cut Delaware's lead down to a one-run game. Aden Hill kicked off the scoring and launched his first career home run as a Terp, which was a two-run shot to right center. Eddie Hacopian hit an RBI bunt, and Chris Hacopian doubled to left center, driving in two runs.  
  • Delaware added two insurance runs, leading 13-10 in the ninth.
