BLOOMINGTON, IN – No. 19 Maryland women's basketball improved to 10-1 on the road this season, defeating Indiana, 74-60, on Thursday at Assembly Hall. The Terps improved to 22-6 overall and 12-5 in Big Ten play, heading into their regular-season finale rematch against Ohio State at XFINITY Center on March 2.
Maryland ignited a four-minute 14-0 run through the midway point of the second quarter. Five different players made shots from the floor during the run. Maryland held Indiana scoreless for five minutes during the run and outscored the Hoosiers 16-6 overall in the frame. This marked the 15th time Maryland held an opponent under 10 points in a quarter. It was a game-altering period, as the Terps led 30-20 at halftime and maintained their lead until the final buzzer.
Shyanne Sellers led the Terps, scoring 25 points and dishing out two assists. She scored 21 of her points in the fourth quarter alone, including all three of her 3-pointers. Indiana scored 21 points as a team in the fourth. She is now also third on Maryland's all-time assists list. The point guard now has 506 dimes in her career, breaking a tie with Tara Heiss (1975-78). Sellers is the only player in program history with 1,500 points, 500 assists and 500 rebounds.
Kaylene Smikle eclipsed 1,300 career points in her career between her time at Rutgers and Maryland. The first-year junior transfer tallied 16 points to go with six rebounds. She has scored double figures in 25 of 28 games this season.
Christina Dalce fell just short of a double-double. She recorded 11 points and eight rebounds. She and
Allie Kubek (six points and 11 rebounds) were the primary catalysts in Maryland winning the battle on the boards. It has won the rebounding battle in 22 of 28 games this season.
Sarah Te-Biasu (eight points, six assists and three rebounds) was another standout. All eight players who touched the floor entered the scoring column.
The Terps are currently fourth place and hold control of their own destiny heading into the regular-season finale with the Buckeyes. A win in that game would secure a top four seed in the Big Ten Tournament, including a double bye.
Indiana (17-11, 9-8) was led by Yarden Garzon's 18 points. The Terps are now 13-5 all-time against the Hoosiers. Indiana previously hadn't lost to Maryland at home since 2020.
Maryland's lone loss on the road this season came on the road against No. 12 Ohio State on Jan. 23, a game Maryland once led by as many as 15 points.
Frese's Take
"I actually thought just the depth of our bench,
Amari DeBerry came in and gave us great minutes, was really confident, head coach
Brenda Frese said. "Mir [McLean] and Emily [Fisher] as well. So just love the fact that every single player made some big plays for us tonight."
From The Girls
"First three quarters weren't really going my way," Sellers said. "I was kind of letting my team down. I mean, the shots I was taking, I felt like most of them were pretty good shots, and they felt good, so I knew they would start falling. So thankfully, they started falling in the fourth quarter, but ultimately, coming in here, I knew I hadn't won here. That was really important to me."
