Payne, Njoku Highlight Opening Day of Big Ten Championship

Sam Payne qualified for the finals in the 600 meters, Chioma Njoku posted a top-10 finish, and a pair of Terps set personal records as the Maryland track team completed day one of Big Ten Indoor Championships hosted at the Indiana State Fairgrounds.
Payne ran a 1:31.22 in the 600 meters placing sixth in the preliminaries and qualifying for the finals that will take place tomorrow in day two of competition.
Njoku posted a mark of 20.79 meters in the weight throw to place 8th overall for the only scoring finish of the day for Maryland.
Maya Mosely set a new personal record in the 400 meter preliminary round today with a time of 56.22. In the mile run, Emmi Simon also set a new personal record with a time of 4:55.63.
Other top performers from today's competition include Maya Valmon finishing 16th in the 400m prelims (54.98 seconds), Armanie Coleman placing 19th in the 60 meters (7.49 seconds), and Rose Coats finishing the 5,000 meters in 16th (16:36.02).
Day two of the Big Ten Indoor Championships will begin at 10 AM on Saturday, March 1 and will be streamed live on Big Ten Plus.
