Terps Lose To Arizona State In 2025 Season Opener, 7-1

TEMPE, AZ – Maryland softball opened its 2025 season with a 7-1 loss against Arizona State in the Kajikawa Classic Tournament at Alberta B. Farrington Softball Stadium on Thursday. 

Madison Runyan tripled to center field in the third inning. Mazie MacFarlane then recorded an RBI groundout to bring Runyan home for the Terps' lone run of the game. Arizona State scored its seven runs through the first four innings. 
  Maryland had five different batters finish with at least one hit in the game. They included Runyan, Caitlyn Cornwell, Sam Bean, Taylor Borovac and Mariah Penta. Borovac's single in the top of the sixth was the first hit of her career.  

Julia Shearer started in the circle for the Terps. Shearer pitched two innings before Aubrey Wurst and Bri Godfrey made relief appearances. 

The Terps will play four different opponents over three days of competition in the Kajikawa Classic. They also play No. 21 California (twice), Miami of Ohio, and Utah.  

Breaking Down The Action
  • The Sun Devils took a 1-0 with a leadoff home run in the bottom of the first inning.
  • In the bottom of the second inning, Arizona State added two more runs.
  • Mazie MacFarlane put the first run on the board with an RBI groundout in the third. She drove in Madison Runyan, who tripled to right center. 
  • Arizona State scored two runs in the bottom frame of the third, leading 5-1.
  • Arizona State added two more runs in the fourth inning.
Terp Debuts 
  • Three Terps debuted in a Maryland uniform, consisting of two freshmen and one transfer. 
  • Mariah Penta, a sophomore transfer from Auburn, first appeared for the Terps. 
  • Freshmen Taylor Borovac and Aubrey Wurst made their collegiate debuts.
