Lewis’s Clutch Hit Powers Terps Over Miami Ohio, 6-4

TEMPE, AZ – Sydney Lewis drove in the go-ahead run on a two-RBI single with bases loaded as Maryland softball defeated Miami Ohio, 6-4, in the Kajikawa Classic Tournament at Alberta B. Farrington Softball Stadium on Friday. 

Trailing by one run, the Terps (2-1) loaded the bases with one out in the top of the seventh inning. Lewis's single drove in two runs, putting Maryland ahead 5-4. Matti Benson extended its lead with an RBI single. It was the freshman's first RBI of her career. 

Benson finished the game 2-for-3 with a walk. Her first collegiate hit came off a bunt in the sixth inning. She also recorded her first career multi-hit game. Lewis posted three RBIs in the game, as her first occurred in the third inning. 

Mazie MacFarlane went 2-for-3 with two doubles and two runs. Between Maryland's two games today, MacFarlane went 5-for-7 with four doubles. Sam Bean drove in the other run for the Terps. 

Bri Godfrey earned the start, pitching 4.1 innings and striking out one batter. Freshman Aubrey Wurst pitched the final 2.3 innings. She surrendered no runs on just one hit while striking out five batters. She slammed the door shut in the bottom of the seventh with two strikeouts to earn her first career win. 

This was the Terps' second win today after upsetting No. 21 California, 6-2. They will play California again on Saturday at 1:15 p.m. EST before rounding out tournament play against Utah at 3:30 p.m. EST.

 
Breaking Down The Action
  • Miami scored the game's first run on a wild pitch in the bottom of the second. They led 1-0. 
  • The Terps loaded the bases in the top of the third as Mazie MacFarlane doubled, Caitlyn Cornwell singled and stole second and Taylor Borovac walked. Sydney Lewis then reached base on a fielding error, scoring two runs. Sam Bean then singled to left field, scoring another. Maryland led 3-1. 
  • In the bottom of the inning, Miami pulled off a double steal and stole home to bridge the gap to 3-2. 
  • Miami took back the lead at 4-3 with an RBI single to center field in the fifth.
