TEMPE, AZ – Maryland softball was defeated by No. 21 California, 13-3, in the Kajikawa Classic Tournament at Alberta B. Farrington Softball Stadium on Saturday. This was the two team's second matchup after the Terps (2-2) upset the Bears 6-3 on Friday.
The Bears (2-1) plated their runs in the first, third, fourth and fifth innings. They scored six in the fourth inning to lead 9-0. However, the Terps got on the board in the bottom of the fourth with an RBI single by
Mariah Penta and a score on an error. California then hit a three-run homer and scored another run with a sacrifice fly in the fifth.
Sydney Lewis homored in the bottom of the fifth for the seventh long-ball of her career. Penta, Caitlyn Cornwell and Bailey Murphy all notched hits in the contest. Gracie Wilson and Gracelyn Solarz scored the runs for the Terps.
Freshman pitcher Aubrey Wurst earned her first career start in the circle on her birthday. She tossed two innings before Julia Shearer and Bri Godfrey pitched the remaining three innings.
Maryland will finish its play in the Kajikawa Classic Tournament with a game this afternoon against Utah at 3:30 p.m. EST.
