Terps Club Two Home Runs In Win Over Utah, 7-5

TEMPE, AZ – Maryland softball closed out play in the Kajikawa Classic Tournament with an 7-5 win against Utah at Alberta B. Farrington Softball Stadium on Saturday. The Terps played five games against four different opponents during the three-day tournament. They went 3-2 overall in tournament play with wins over No. 21 California, Utah and Miami of Ohio.

The Terps got their offense going early against the Utes in the second inning. Sam Bean led off the inning with a single and was moved to second base on a sac bunt by Mariah Penta. Julia Shearer followed that up with a single of her own, to get runners on the corners. Sammi Woods would get the scoring started for the Terps with a two-out RBI single to center field to put the Terps up 1-0 early on.

The Utes would level the scoring in the bottom half of the second on a sac fly to make it a 1-1 game. The Utes loaded the bases with two out later in the inning, but Bri Godfrey was able to work out of the jam and keep it a tie game.

The Terps went back in front in the top of the third. Caitlyn Cornwell led off the inning with a single to left field, and was followed by Matti Benson who reached on an error. Sydney Lewis showed off the power, knocking a three-run home run over the right field fence to give the Terps a 4-1 lead.

The Terps would extend their lead in the top of the fourth on a two-run shot by freshman Matti Benson. The home run was the first of her career and the second of the game for the Terps. Maryland would add another run in the fifth, with Gracie Wilson scoring on the throwing error by the Utah first baseman. Utah would get a run of its own in the bottom of the fifth, scoring on a single up the middle.

Utah closed to within two, scoring three runs in the bottom of the sixth. Utah would load the bases in the seventh with two outs, but Godfrey would get a fly out to right field to secure the win.

Godfrey got her second start of the weekend, going 6.2 innings with a pair of strikeouts, allowing only four hits in the outing.

Lewis and Benson homered in the game. Cornwell picked up her first multi-hit game of her career, finishing the game with a pair of singles. Julia Shearer went 2-3 in the game, including a double in seventh inning.

Maryland will now play in the Bevo Classic in Austin. They will play three teams across the three-day tournament, including two match-ups with Texas and UMass and one with Texas Tech.
