WINSTON-SALEM, NC – Maryland baseball used clutch hitting in the top of the ninth to score three runs and defeat No. 12 Wake Forest, 9-8, at David F. Couch Ballpark on Saturday. The Terps are now 6-4 overall, going 2-0 on the day with a win earlier today against Princeton. This was
Matt Swope's first win over a ranked team as Maryland's head coach.
The Terps out-hit the Deacons (9-2) 20-13 in the win. However,
Jacob Orr plated the go-ahead run with an RBI single. He was one of three Terps to record RBI singles with two outs. The others were
Alex Calarco and
Hollis Porter.
Andrew Johnson entered the game, recorded the final three outs, and picked up his third career save. This was his second save of the day, as he recorded one in 0.2 innings pitched in the Princeton game.
Orr led the Terps, going 4-for-6 with a double to go along with three RBIs and two runs. His first hit of the game, a two-RBI single to put the Terps on the board first, was his 100th career hit.
Calarco extended his hitting streak to nine games. He went 4-for-6 with a double and two runs. He has recorded an RBI in nine of Maryland's first 10 games and leads the Terps with 25 RBIs, also ranking first in the NCAA.
Aden Hill continued hitting his stride. He went 2-for-5 with a pair of doubles while recording two RBIs and a run. The transfer from VCU has nine RBIs over his last three games. Brayden Martin also recorded multiple hits, going 2-for-3 with three walks.
Porter went 3-for-6 with two RBIs. He homered in the fourth, tying the game at six apiece. The long ball was his fourth of the season since transferring from Pearl River Community College. He recorded multiple hits, going 2-for-5. Elijah Lambros also drove in a run.
Joey McMannis earned his third start of the season on the mound. He pitched two scoreless innings, surrendering three hits and striking out two batters. However, he left the game early because of an injury.
Brayden Ryan and Andrew Koshy combined to pitch the next two innings before Ryan Van Buren pitched the remaining four innings. He struck out just one batter but gave up only one run on three hits.
