COLLEGE PARK, MD -- Maryland prepares for a pair of midweek games this week, facing off against #23 Virginia and Mount St. Mary's. Maryland and Virginia reignite their old ACC rivalry, with this being the first meeting since the 2015 Super Regionals. Mount St. Mary's and Maryland meet for the first of two games this season. The Terrapins won both games last season against the Mountaineers.
The Terrapins are coming off a series loss at home to UCLA to open Big Ten play. The Terps took the lead early in game one of the series, before the Bruins would take the lead in the ninth inning. The Terps would tie the game in the bottom of the ninth, before losing the game in extra innings. The Terps took the second game of the weekend, earning a 13-3 run rule victory. The Terps fell in the rubber match of the weekend, losing 11-5 to close out the series.
King of the Hill
- Aden Hill had a pair of home runs in Friday's 17-1 win over Princeton in Winston-Salem, with both home runs coming in the second inning. In Hill's first appearance at the plate, the junior right fielder clubbed a two-run shot over the left field fence. In his second at bat of the inning, Hill hit a three-run homer to the same exact spot in right center field.
- Hill's two home runs tied an NCAA record for the most home runs by a player in an inning. Hill is the first Terp to accomplish the feat since Will Watson, who hit two home runs in the third inning in a 17-2 win over Rutgers back on May 12, 2018.
Aden Hill launched two home runs in the second inning of Maryland's 17-1 win over Princeton on Friday. The two home run inning for Hill tied an NCAA record.
Turn Up AC
- Alex Calarco continues to be one of the top hitters in the nation. Calarco launched two home runs and had four RBI to increase his season totals.
- Calarco's 10 home runs this season are the second-most in the nation and lead the Big Ten. Calarco was the first player to reach double-digit home runs nationally, while his 33 RBI are the fourth-most in the country.
- Last week, Calarco was named the Dick Howser Trophy National Hitter of the Month. This comes after Calarco finished the month of February with a .424 average, seven home runs, and 22 RBI. Calarco clubbed three grand slams in the season's first month, while also leading the country in home runs and RBI in the season's first month.
Alex Calarco has been swinging a hot bat for the Terps to start the season. Through 15 games, Calarco is batting .413. Calarco has 10 home runs and 33 RBI, both of which rank in the top five in Division I.
Ain't It Grand
- The Terps got off to a great start with the bases loaded, hitting six grand slams in their first six games. College records aren't available to confirm if a team has ever hit six grand slams in a six-game span. For perspective, never in Major League Baseball history since 1901, has a team hit six grand slams in a six-game span, let alone in the first six games of a season. The 2020 San Diego Padres hit five grand slams in a six-game span within a season from Aug. 17-22, 2020.
- By comparison the 2023 Maryland team which finished the year with a national-best 11 grand slams, hit a grand slam in each of their first three games and four in their first six games.
- Alex Calarco leads the pack with three grand slams this season. He is followed by Chris Hacopian, who has hit two grand slams this year. Paul Jones II hit a grand slam during Maryland's 35-12 win on Saturday, which was also his first home run of his collegiate career.
Chris Hacopian hit his second grand slam of the year on Feb. 23 against Western Carolina. The grand slam was the sixth of the season for the Terps in their first six games.
