No. 5 Terps Hit The Road For Matchup Against Penn State

COLLEGE PARK, MD -- Maryland will hit the road to open up conference play as they travel to University Park, Pennsylvania to face-off against Penn State (2-5) on Thursday, March 13, at 1 p.m. at Panzer Stadium.
 
Where We've Been
  • The Terrapins are 4-1 on the season heading into Big Ten Play. After dropping its season opener to then-No. 6 Syracuse (15-9, Feb. 15), Maryland responded with four straight wins over Georgetown (9-7, Feb. 18) Saint Joseph's (18-7, Feb. 22) Denver (14-10, Mar. 1), and No.13 JMU (11-5, Mar. 8).
  • Junior Kori Edmondson is the catalyst for the Terrapins offense and leads the team with 19 points and 15 goals on the season. Grad student Chrissy Thomas leads the team with 11 assists which is eighth in the Big Ten. Defensively, the Terps are anchored by captains Kennedy Major and Neve O'Ferrall.  
  • Kori Edmondson has been named the Big Ten Midfielder of the Week for the second consecutive week, as announced by the conference on Tuesday. Sophomore JJ Suriano also received conference recognition, earning Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week honors.
  • Edmondson was named the Big Ten Midfielder of the Week for the third time in her career. She recorded three goals, an assist, two ground balls, and two caused turnovers as No. 5 Maryland topped No. 13 James Madison 11-5. 
  • JJ Suriano posted 13 saves and a 72.2 save percentage as the Terps scored an 11-5 victory at No. 13 James Madison. She earns her first Defensive Player of the Week accolade.
Series history vs. Penn State
  • This marks the 63rd meeting between Maryland and Penn State. The Terps have historically controlled the series, leading 44-18-1 over the past 51 years. The two teams first met in 1974, with Maryland earning a 9-8 victory.
  • Chrissy Thomas is the only current Terp who recorded a goal against Penn State last season. In 2024, Thomas scored three goals and assist but the Terps would fall to Penn State 12-11.
Scouting The Nittany Lions
  • Penn State will open conference play after starting the season 2-5. Penn State has victories over Saint Joseph's and Bucknell so far this season.
  • Offensively, Erika Ho leads the way for the Nittany Lions, leading the team in goals (19) and points (21). Kelly MacKinney is the top faciliatory on the offense as her 17 assists rank third in the Big Ten.
  • In goal, Sydney Manning anchors the Nittany Lions defense. Currently this season she has a 10.81 GAA and a .377 save percentage.

Thomas Moving Up The Charts
  • With three assists in the 2025 season opener, Chrissy Thomas became just the 66th player in Maryland women's lacrosse history to reach the 100-point mark for her career. Thomas currently has 114 points which ranks her tied for 61st on the all-time list.

Hall Call
  • On February 14, the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) announced the 2025 IWLCA Hall of Fame, which included Maryland head coach Cathy Reese.
  • Reese has guided Maryland to five national championships (2010, 2014, 2015, 2017, 2019), 11 Final Fours, and 20 regular-season and tournament championships across the ACC and Big Ten. She is recognized as a four-time IWLCA National Coach of the Year (2010, 2014, 2015, 2019) and a 12-time conference coach of the year.
  • Reese joins former Maryland head coaches Cindy Timchal (Class of 2017) and Suzanne Tyler (Class of 2018) in the IWLCA Hall of Fame.
Dominance Under Reese
  • Head Coach Cathy Reese is in her 19th season at the helm of Maryland women's lacrosse. The winningest coach in program history, Reese is 334-48 (.874) as head coach and has led the Terps to five National Championships, 12 Final Fours, and 22 Conference Championships.
  • Reese is the fifth all-time winningest active head coach and the sixth-winningest coach of all-time in Division 1 women's lacrosse at 364-77 (.825). Former Maryland head coach Cindy Timchal is the all-time winningest women's lacrosse coach with 580 wins.
  • Reese has the highest winning percentage of any current Maryland head coach as a Terrapin head coach.
