Box Score PISCATAWAY, NJ – Maryland softball was defeated by Rutgers, 5-1, in game one of its Big Ten opening series at Rutgers Softball Complex on Friday. The Terps are 10-12 heading into game two.
After Mazie MacFarlane tied the game at one apiece in the top of the third with a deep shot that left the park on a fielding error, Rutgers (14-15) scored four unanswered runs to secure the game one victory. The four unanswered featured two runs in the fifth on a two-RBI single and one run each in the third and sixth.
Julia Shearer started in the circle. She pitched 4.1 innings and struck out three batters. Keira Bucher pitched the remaining 1.2 innings, surrendering two hits and striking out two batters.
Sam Bean and Bailey Murphy were the lone Terps to record hits in the game.
Big Ten Pitcher and Freshman of the Week, Ella Harrison, pitched a complete game, surrendering just one run on two hits.

- Rutgers took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second as it executed a double steal at second and home plate.
- Maryland responded with a run in the top of the third as Mazie MacFarlane lifted a ball to right center. The outfielder dropped the ball, and it went over the fence, allowing her to score. The game was tied at 1-1.
- The Scarlet Knights scored the go-ahead run to take a 2-1 lead on a sacrifice fly in the third.
- Rutgers plated two more runs on a two-RBI single in the fifth. However, Keira Bucher entered the circle and got out of a jam. Sam Bean caught a runner stealing second base to end the inning.
- The Scarlet Knights added one final run on an RBI single in the sixth. They led 5-1 entering the top of the seventh.
