COLLEGE PARK, MD – No. 5 Maryland women's lacrosse earned its second ranked win of the season, outlasting No. 11 Michigan, 14-12, in its 2025 Big Ten Conference home opener at Maryland Field Hockey and Lacrosse Complex on Sunday.
The Terps improved to 6-1 this season and 2-0 in conference action, winning their sixth straight game. Maryland also improved to 12-0 all-time against Michigan in the two schools' head-to-head series dating back to 2015.
Maryland and Michigan (5-3) went back and forth, trading goals for the majority of the contest. However, the Terps established the first three-goal lead of the game — 11-8 — at the 6:09 mark in the third after back-to-back goals by Kate Sites and Kori Edmondson. The Wolverines later brought the game back within a goal, but scores by Maisy Clevenger and Jordyn Lipkin late in the quarter reestablished the three-goal lead. The Terps' defense and one final tally by Lipkin in the fourth were enough to escape with the win.
Sites posted a hat trick in the first quarter alone. She finished with a career-high tying four goals. She matched her scoring output in Maryland's NCAA First Round matchup last season against Robert Morris on May 10, 2024.
Edmondson, the Big Ten Midfielder of the Week, tallied two goals and an assist. She has scored multiple goals in six of Maryland's seven games this season. Emma Abbazia and Clevenger (two goals and an assist) also recorded multiple goals, each scoring two. Shelby Sullivan and Chrissy Thomas also scored goals.
Sophie Halus caused two turnovers to lead Maryland's defense in front of Suriano. Annabella Schafer, Kayla Gilmore and Lexi Dupcak also caused turnovers.
The Terps won 17 of 27 draw controls as a team. Sullivan (six wins), Gilmore (three wins) and Hailey Russo (three wins) led the team from the draw circle.
