COLLEGE PARK, MD -- Maryland gets back into Big Ten play this weekend, as it travels to Seattle to take on Washington. This marks the first meeting between the programs as conference opponents. Maryland and Washington met for the first time last season as a part of the Kleberg Bank College Classic in Corpus Christi, Texas. Both teams battled back and forth, with Washington winning by a score of 6-5.

The Terrapins are coming off a 14-7 win over Georgetown at home on Tuesday. The Terps clubbed three home runs in the game, including Elijah Lambros who hit his first homer of the season and drove in four runs. Devin Milberg threw three innings of scoreless relief to earn his first win as a Terps. The graduate student lefty allowed just one hit in his three innings of work and had a strikeout.

McCoy's Brilliance On The Mound
  • Redshirt sophomore Kyle McCoy has been one of the best pitchers in the conference this season after returning from an injury that kept him out for the entire 2024 season. Through five starts, McCoy has a 3-0 record with a 1.72 ERA and 30 strikeouts.
  • McCoy tied his longest outing of his career against USF, going eight innings. The start for McCoy was his third consecutive with seven or more strikeouts. McCoy only allowed one earned run in the outing, with four outings this season where the lefty has allowed zero or one earned run.
  • McCoy ranks in the top 10 in multiple categories in the Big Ten. His 1.72 ERA is the fourth-best in the conference and his 0.93 WHIP ranks fifth. McCoy has a 6:1 strikeout to walk ratio on the season, striking out 30 batters while allowing just five walks.

Turn Up AC
  • Alex Calarco continues to be one of the top hitters in the nation. Calarco ranks among some of the top hitters in multiple categories as we approach the midpoint of the season.
  • Calarco's 10 home runs this season are the seventh-most in the nation and are tied for the most in the Big Ten. Calarco was the first player to reach double-digit home runs nationally, while his 37 RBI are tied for the fourth-most in the country.
  • Last week, Calarco was named the Dick Howser Trophy National Hitter of the Month. This comes after Calarco finished the month of February with a .424 average, seven home runs, and 22 RBI. Calarco clubbed three grand slams in the season's first month, while also leading the country in home runs and RBI in the season's first month.
Alex Calarco Celebrates Second Grand Slam of the Season
Alex Calarco has been swinging a hot bat for the Terps to start the season. Through 21 games, Calarco is batting .353. Calarco has 10 home runs and 37 RBI, both of which rank in the top ten in Division I.
Ain't It Grand
  • The Terps got off to a great start with the bases loaded, hitting six grand slams in their first six games. College records aren't available to confirm if a team has ever hit six grand slams in a six-game span. For perspective, never in Major League Baseball history since 1901, has a team hit six grand slams in a six-game span, let alone in the first six games of a season. The 2020 San Diego Padres hit five grand slams in a six-game span within a season from Aug. 17-22, 2020.
  • By comparison the 2023 Maryland team which finished the year with a national-best 11 grand slams, hit a grand slam in each of their first three games and four in their first six games.
  • Alex Calarco leads the pack with three grand slams this season. He is followed by Chris Hacopian, who has hit two grand slams this year. Paul Jones II hit a grand slam during Maryland's 35-12 win on Saturday, which was also his first home run of his collegiate career.

Scouting The Huskies
  • Washington split a pair of midweek games against Pacific Lutheran. In the first game of the midweek, pitchers from each team kept the opposing offenses in check. The teams combined for a total of four runs on Tuesday, with Pacific Lutheran getting a 3-1 win. In game two, Washington's offense took control. The Huskies had a four run fifth inning and a six run sixth inning, as they earned a 12-0 run-rule victory in seven innings. Will Woodward earned the win after coming on in relief, throwing four scoreless innings and striking out seven.
  • Casen Taggart leads the team with a .354 average, adding three home runs and 14 RBI. Colton Bower leads the team in  home runs, launching four this season. Bower also has been hit by 12 pitches this year, which is the sixth-most in Division I. Trevor Kole holds the team lead in RBI, with 15 on the year.
  • The pitching staff is led by Jackson Thomas, who comes into the weekend with a 2-1 record. The senior righty has a 2.42 with 20 strikeouts, while holding batters to a .207 average. Peysen Sweeney is tied for the team lead with eight appearances out of the bullpen, and comes into the weekend with a 2.40 ERA and 14 strikeouts in 15 innings.
Stanley Bobb Baseball Player Development Center
  • On Wednesday, Jan. 14, Maryland unveiled the new Stanley Bobb Baseball Performance Center. This will serve as the new indoor training facility for the Maryland Baseball program.
  • This new state-of-the-art facility will allow baseball student-athletes the opportunity to train year round in a controlled environment, allowing them to continue to hone their skills regardless of the conditions.
  • The 8,500 square foot facility will have defined spaces for both pitchers and hitters in a climate controlled environment. The facility features state-of-the-art technology.
  • This project is one of the many as part of Maryland's Building Champions initiative, a campaign that enables investment in facility renovation and enhancement.
  • The facility is named after the late Stanley Bobb, who pitched for the Terps from 1954-57. A member of the Greater Washington Jewish Sports Hall of Fame, Bobb was the starting pitcher in the dedication game at then-Shipley Field in 1954.
