Terps Drop Game Two At No. 12 Wake Forest, 9-1

WINSTON-SALEM, NC – After taking down No. 12 Wake Forest the prior afternoon, the Terps dropped game two against the Deacons, 9-1, at David F. Couch Ballpark on Sunday. Maryland (6-5) went 3-1 on the weekend, sweeping Princeton and splitting its games with Wake Forest. 

The Deacons (10-3) scored eight runs between the seventh and eighth innings to secure the win. With the game tied at one apiece, Ethan Conrad drove in the go-ahead runs with a three-run homer to right field in the seventh. Jack Winnay followed with a solo shot, and Wake Forest led 5-1. Wake Forest added one final in the inning before
Hitting another three-run blast in the eighth. Freshman Colin Gibbs scored the lone run for the Terps, tying the game in the top of the inning with an RBI groundout. 

Freshman right-handed pitcher Logan Hastings made his first career start on the mound. He pitched 4.2 scoreless innings before Wake Forest scored its first run of the game in the fifth inning with two outs, hitting an RBI single through the right side. He finished the contest with career highs in innings pitched (five) and strikeouts (seven). Overall, he surrendered just one run on just four hits. Jack Wren, Cristofer Cespedes and Devin Milberg also appeared on the mound.  
  Gibbs was one of four Terps to record a hit in the contest. The others were Eddie Hacopian, Alex Calarco and Jacob Orr. Calarco extended his hit streak to 10 games. 

Blake Morningstar dueled it out on the mound opposite Hastings, finishing with seven strikeouts and the win. He gave up no runs on three hits.

Breaking Down The Action
  • Maryland pitcher Logan Hastings held Wake Forest scoreless through the first four innings of play.
  • The Deacons scored the first run of the game in the fifth with an RBI single.
  • The Terps nearly scored the go-ahead run in the top of the sixth as Hollis Porter went deep opposite-field. However, the Deacons' outfielder made an impressive catch while fighting the run and falling to the ground.
  • Jack Wren took the mound in the sixth. He gave up a double but picked off the base runner to end the inning. The Terps trailed 1-0 entering the seventh. 
  • The Terps tied the game in the top of the seventh, with a ground out RBI by Colin Gibbs.
  • Wake Forest retook the lead in the bottom of the seventh, scoring five runs, which featured back-to-back homers, including a three-run shot to left center.

  • Freshman Colin Gibbs recorded his first career start in game one against Princeton, filling in for an injured Chris Hacopian at shortstop. He had a great weekend, going 5-for-15 with four RBIs.
