COLLEGE PARK, MD -- Maryland continues a five-game home stand as it hosts Northwestern this weekend. This marks the second consecutive season where the two teams have met. Northwestern one the series last season, taking two of three over Maryland in Evanston.

The Terrapins come into the weekend after scoring nine runs in the eighth inning in a comeback 15-8 win over George Mason on Tuesday. Trailing 8-6 heading into the bottom of the eighth inning, Brayden Martin and Eddie Hacopian got the scoring started with a pair of run-scoring singles. Alex Calarco, Jacob Orr, and Hollis Porter each followed with RBI doubles to highlight the comeback for the Terps.

Turn Up AC
  • Alex Calarco continues to be one of the top hitters in the nation. Calarco ranks among some of the top hitters in multiple categories as we approach the midpoint of the season.
  • Calarco's 11 home runs this season are the seventh-most in the nation and are tied for the most in the Big Ten. Calarco was the first player to reach double-digit home runs nationally, while his 41 RBI are tied for the fourth-most in the country.
  • Earlier this month, Calarco was named the Dick Howser Trophy National Hitter of the Month for the month of February. This comes after Calarco finished the month of February with a .424 average, seven home runs, and 22 RBI. Calarco clubbed three grand slams in the season's first month, while also leading the country in home runs and RBI in the season's first month.

Alex Calarco continues to lead the Terrapins' offense in multiple categories and be one of the best hitters in the country. Calarco ranks in the top ten in both home runs and RBI this season, while hitting for a .337 batting average.
McCoy's Brilliance On The Mound
  • Redshirt sophomore Kyle McCoy has been one of the best pitchers in the conference this season after returning from an injury that kept him out for the entire 2024 season. Through six starts, McCoy has a 3-1 record with a 2.75 ERA and 36 strikeouts.
  • McCoy tied his longest outing of his career against USF, going eight innings. The start for McCoy was his third consecutive with seven or more strikeouts. McCoy only allowed one earned run in the outing, with four outings this season where the lefty has allowed zero or one earned run.
  • McCoy has been very effective in his first season back from injury. McCoy has had four consecutive starts with six or more strikeouts in an outing, holding a strikeout-to-walk ratio of 5.1:1. McCoy's three wins are tied for the seventh-most in the conference, while throwing the third-most innings and sixth-fewest walks in the Big Ten.

In his return to the mound after an injury that kept him out for the entire 2024 season, Kyle McCoy has been phenomenal on the mound for Maryland. The redshirt sophomore pitcher has a 3-1 record with a 2.75 ERA and 36 strikeouts
Ain't It Grand
  • The Terps got off to a great start with the bases loaded, hitting six grand slams in their first six games. College records aren't available to confirm if a team has ever hit six grand slams in a six-game span. For perspective, never in Major League Baseball history since 1901, has a team hit six grand slams in a six-game span, let alone in the first six games of a season. The 2020 San Diego Padres hit five grand slams in a six-game span within a season from Aug. 17-22, 2020.
  • By comparison the 2023 Maryland team which finished the year with a national-best 11 grand slams, hit a grand slam in each of their first three games and four in their first six games.
  • Alex Calarco leads the pack with three grand slams this season. He is followed by Chris Hacopian, who has hit two grand slams this year. Paul Jones II hit a grand slam during Maryland's 35-12 win on Saturday, which was also his first home run of his collegiate career.

Chris Hacopian Celebrates Ninth Inning Grand Slam Against Western Carolina
Chris Hacopian hit his second grand slam of the year on Feb. 23 against Western Carolina. The grand slam was the sixth of the season for the Terps in their first six games.
Scouting The Wildcats
  • Northwestern enter the series after suffering a 2-1 loss at home to Western Michigan. The Wildcats fell behind early, on a double and a sac fly in the top of the third. The Wildcats mounted a ninth inning comeback effort, with Ryan Kucherak bringing home a run on an RBI double. The comeback bid fell just short for Northwestern, with a ground out ending the game. Northwestern is one of the better fielding teams in the country, coming into the weekend with a .981 fielding percentage that is the 15th-best in the country.
  • The Wildcast are led on offense by Trent Liolios, with the junior leading the team in most offensive categories. Liolios has  a .371 average, with nine home runs and 21 RBI. His nine home runs are tied for the fifth-most in the Big Ten and ranks in the top 30 nationally. Owen McElfatrick is next, with the junior infielder coming into the series with a .316 average and second on the team with 24 hits.
  • The pitching staff is led by four pitchers who each have two wins on the season. Blake MacMillan leads the bunch, with a 2-0 record with 18 strikeouts in 20 innings pitched. Jack Grunkemeyer is second on the team with nine appearances. The freshman righty has a 3.12 ERA, with 13 strikeouts this season and is holding opposing batters to a .167 batting average. Sam Hliboki leads the team with 11 appearances, and has made four starts. Hliboki is tied for the team lead with 25 strikeouts and two saves, while pitching to a 3.78 ERA in 33.1 innings on the mound.
Stanley Bobb Baseball Player Development Center
  • On Wednesday, Jan. 14, Maryland unveiled the new Stanley Bobb Baseball Performance Center. This will serve as the new indoor training facility for the Maryland Baseball program.
  • This new state-of-the-art facility will allow baseball student-athletes the opportunity to train year round in a controlled environment, allowing them to continue to hone their skills regardless of the conditions.
  • The 8,500 square foot facility will have defined spaces for both pitchers and hitters in a climate controlled environment. The facility features state-of-the-art technology.
  • This project is one of the many as part of Maryland's Building Champions initiative, a campaign that enables investment in facility renovation and enhancement.
  • The facility is named after the late Stanley Bobb, who pitched for the Terps from 1954-57. A member of the Greater Washington Jewish Sports Hall of Fame, Bobb was the starting pitcher in the dedication game at then-Shipley Field in 1954.
