COLLEGE PARK, MD – Maryland softball was defeated by No. 7 UCLA, 9-0, in game one of its series at Maryland Softball Stadium on Friday. The Terps sit at 15-16 overall and 3-5 in Big Ten play entering game two.
UCLA (30-5, 5-1 Big Ten) scored eight of its nine runs in the fourth and fifth innings. Former All-American Megan Grant drove in six of the Bruins' runs. She went 2-for-3 with a three-run home run and a bases-clearing double with bases loaded.
Sophomore Bailey Murphy went 2-for-2 with two singles to earn her seventh multi-hit game of the season. She leads all Terps with a .417 batting average through 31 games.
Sydney Lewis was the other Terp to record a hit in the game. She also hit a single.
Julia Shearer made the start in the circle. She pitched 3.2 innings before Aubrey Wurst and Keria Bucher both made relief appearances.
Bruins' pitcher Kaitlyn Terry, the reigning Pac-12 freshman of the year, improved to 13-3 in the circle. This was her sixth complete game and third shutout of the season.
Breaking Down The Action
- UCLA scored the first run of the game in the second. However, Julia Shearer escaped a bases-loaded scenario, recording the three outs with a key double play by Sammi Woods off a tipped ball.
- The Bruins extended its lead to 6-0 in the fourth inning. They hit an RBI single and a three-run home run.
- UCLA loaded the bases in the fifth and cleared them with an RBI double to lead 9-0.
