Terps Lose High-Scoring Affair To Northwestern, 18-8

COLLEGE PARK, MD – In a game that featured a combined 28 runs, Maryland baseball was defeated by Northwestern, 18-8, at Bob "Turtle" Smith Stadium on Friday. Maryland is now 13-14 overall and 2-6 in Big Ten action heading into game three of the series.  

Despite the loss, Maryland had a strong comeback effort. Northwestern (12-12, 5-3 Big Ten) scored 12 runs through the first three innings to lead 12-2. The Terps then scored five unanswered runs through the bottom of the third and fourth innings to cut the deficit to 12-7. Still, the Wildcats responded with a six-run sixth inning to put the game away after seven innings.  

Hollis Porter led the Terps offensively with a season-high tying four RBIs. He Went 3-for-4 with two RBI doubles and a two-RBI single. He has nine RBIs over his last three games. 

  Alex Calarco drove in a run and led the Terps with two runs scored. The senior leads the Terps with 42 RBIs through 27 games. Aden Hill and Jacob Orr also drove in runs. Hill went 2-for-4 with a double, and Orr went 2-for-3 with two singles. 

Brayden Martin (2-for-5) and Chris Hacopian (2-for-4) were other Terps to record multiple hits.    


Breaking Down The Action
  • Northwestern took a 3-0 early lead in the top of the first inning. A RBI double down the right field line, an infield fly and a sacrifice fly brought in the three runs.
  • Alex Calarco drove in a run on a fielder's choice in the bottom of the inning, and Hollis Porter added an RBI double. The Terps trailed 3-2. 
  • Northwestern hit a grand slam in the second and took a 7-2 lead. 
  • The Wildcats increased their lead to 12-2 in the third with a bases-clearing double with bases loaded and a two-run home run.  
  • Maryland scored three runs in the bottom of the inning on another Porter RBI double, a groundout by Aden Hill and a fielder's choice from Elijah Lambros. It trailed 12-5.
  • Porter hit a two-RBI single in the fifth as the Terp continued to chip away at the Northwestern lead. They trailed 12-7. 
  • Ryan Van Buren pitched a 1-2-3 bottom of the inning, but the Terps still trailed 12-7. 
  • The Wildcats hit two three-run homers in the sixth to lead 18-7. 
  • The Terps got one run back in the bottom of the inning with an RBI single by Jacob Orr.
