COLLEGE PARK, MD – Julia Shearer struck out a career-high seven batters as Maryland softball defeated Saint Joseph's, 8-0, in its 2025 home opener at Maryland Softball Stadium on Tuesday. The Terps improved to 7-10 overall.
Shearer allowed just three hits while surrendering no runs to Saint Joseph's (7-8) batters. She now has back-to-back complete-game shutouts pitched, giving her five complete games and two shutouts for her career. The sophomore was also awarded the sixth win of her career.
Sydney Lewis hit her fourth home run of the season. It was a three-run shot that occurred in the bottom of the fourth, giving Maryland a commanding 7-0 lead. It was her 10th career home run overall.
The Terps then added one final run to end the game in the sixth as Mazie MacFarlane doubled, scoring Madison Runyan. MacFarlane went 2-for-4 with two runs scored.
Freshman Matti Benson drove in multiple runs, bringing in two of Maryland's four runs in the third with a single up the middle. Bailey Murphy and Mariah Penta also drove in runs in the inning with RBI singles.
Murphy went 2-for-3 with multiple hits, and
Caitlyn Cornwell went 2-for-2 with two runs.
