COLLEGE PARK, MD -- Maryland opens up Big Ten play at home as it hosts one of the conference's newest UCLA. This will be the first meeting between the two programs since the 2015 NCAA Tournament, where Maryland defeated UCLA 2-1 to advance to its second consecutive super regional. Maryland holds the slight advantage in the all-time series with a record of 4-2.

The Terrapins come into the series after picking up their first home win of the season, defeating James Madison 8-4. Freshman Jake Yeager got his second collegiate start and got his first collegiate win, going five innings and only allowing one hit. Alex Calarco continued his strong start to the season, clubbing a two-run homer and a two RBI double in the win. The win for the Terps was also their 800th all-time at Bob "Turtle" Smith Stadium.

King of the Hill
  • Aden Hill had a pair of home runs in Friday's 17-1 win over Princeton in Winston-Salem, with both home runs coming in the second inning.  In Hill's first appearance at the plate, the junior right fielder clubbed a two-run shot over the left field fence. In his second at bat of the inning, Hill hit a three-run homer to the same exact spot in right center field.
  • Hill's two home runs tied an NCAA record for the most home runs by a player in an inning. Hill is the first Terp to accomplish the feat since Will Watson, who hit two home runs in the third inning in a 17-2 win over Rutgers back on May 12, 2018.

Turn Up AC
  • Alex Calarco continues to be one of the top hitters not only for Maryland, but in the nation. Calarco finished the weekend in Winston-Salem batting .444 with double and four RBI
  • Calarco still ranks in the top five in both home runs and RBI this season. Both his eight home runs and 29 RBI are tied for the second-most in all of Division I.
  • Last weekend Calarco finished with with two home runs and 12 RBI. For his efforts, Calarco was named the Golden Spikes National Player of the Week. He is the first Terp to receive the honor since Matt Shaw, who earned it for the week of May 9, 2022. Calarco was also named by D1Baseball as the top performing offensive player of the weekend.
Alex Calarco Celebrates Second Grand Slam of the Season
Alex Calarco has been swinging a hot bat for the Terps to start the season. Through 12 games, Calarco is batting .442. Calarco has eight home runs and 29 RBI, both of which rank second in all of Divison I.
Ain't It Grand
  • The Terps got off to a great start with the bases loaded, hitting six grand slams in their first six games. College records aren't available to confirm if a team has ever hit six grand slams in a six-game span. For perspective, never in Major League Baseball history since 1901, has a team hit six grand slams in a six-game span, let alone in the first six games of a season. The 2020 San Diego Padres hit five grand slams in a six-game span within a season from Aug. 17-22, 2020.
  • By comparison the 2023 Maryland team which finished the year with a national-best 11 grand slams, hit a grand slam in each of their first three games and four in their first six games.
  • Alex Calarco leads the pack with three grand slams this season. He is followed by Chris Hacopian, who has hit two grand slams this year. Paul Jones II hit a grand slam during Maryland's 35-12 win on Saturday, which was also his first home run of his collegiate career.

Chris Hacopian Celebrates Ninth Inning Grand Slam Against Western Carolina
Chris Hacopian hit his second grand slam of the year on Feb. 23 against Western Carolina. The grand slam was the sixth of the season for the Terps in their first six games.
Scouting the Bruins
  • James Madison comes into the start of conference play after a midweek non-conference game against fellow Big Ten foe Michigan 22-5. All nine starters reached base in the game and eight drove in at least one run. Blake Balsz led the way for the Bruins, picking up six RBI. UCLA scored runs in each of the first five innings in the run rule victory.
  • On offense Cashel Dugger leads the Bruins in batting average at .346, followed by Roch Cholowsky who has a .326 batting average. Cholowsky also leads the Bruins in both home runs (five) and RBI (20) through the team's first 13 games.
  • On the pitching side, Justin Lee leads the Bruins in appearances with seven so far this season. Lee is second on the team in wins with two, trailing Michael Barnett who has three. Wylan Ross leads the team in innings with 14 and is holding opposing hitters to a .208 batting average.
