Evanston, IL – Maryland wrestling completed Day One of the 2025 Big Ten Championships in record-setting fashion. The Terps finished the day with 47.5 points, breaking the program record of 39 points set at the 2024 Big Ten Championships with one day still to go. Additionally, Maryland set a new program-record with six placers, besting the record of four that was set last season.
Braxton Brown (133), Kal Miller (149), Ethen Miller (157), Branson John (174), Jaxon Smith (184) and Seth Nevills (285) all earned top-eight finishes in addition to automatic qualifications to the 2025 NCAA Championships in Philadelphia.
Brown and Smith earned semifinal berths and will be able to finish as high as third tomorrow. Ethen Miller and John both won a pair of matches in the wrestlebacks to push through to the consolation semifinals as well, and can also place as high as third. John, a true freshman, entered the weekend as the 12-seed and went 3-1 on the day with three victories over higher-seeded opponents.
Kal Miller and Nevills each won a match on the backside of the bracket to clinch their spot in tomorrow's seventh-place match.
Maryland currently sits in eighth place with its 47.5 points.
Session III gets underway tomorrow at 1 pm EST. Session IV and the placement matches with air on BTN at 5:30 pm EST.
