COLLEGE PARK, MD – Maryland softball was defeated by Penn State, 10-2, in game one of its series at Maryland Softball Complex on Friday. The Terps are now 17-26 overall and 3-14 in Big Ten play.
Penn State (21-24, 7-10 Big Ten) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first. Maryland then tied the game in the bottom of the third at 2-2 after a Sammi Woods homer. However, the Nittany Lions scored eight unanswered runs to earn the victory.
Woods' solo home run to left field was her fourth career home run and third of the season. The junior is in the midst of a career year. She hit just one home run during her freshman campaign in 2023. Woods went 2-for-2, also recording a bunt single.
Madison Runyan drove in the other run for the Terps on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the first. She drove in Mazie MacFarlane.
Julia Shearer earned her 21st start of the season in the circle. She pitched four innings, surrendering four runs on five hits. She struck out one batter and didn't allow a free pass. The sophomore also recorded a hit.
Bri Godfrey entered from the bullpen and pitched 1.1 innings before Aubrey Wurst made an appearance.
