No. 2 Seed Terps Face No. 1 Seed Northwestern In B1G Finals

COLLEGE PARK, MD -- Maryland will play No. 1 seed and No. 3-ranked Northwestern in the Big Ten Tournament title game at the Field Hockey and Lacrosse Complex on April 27 at 4 p.m. The game will be televised on the Big Ten Network. The Terps have now made the Big Ten Tournament Championship in every year except 2015 and 2024 since joining the conference in 2015. They improved to 14-4 overall, winning seven of their last eight games and picking up their fifth win over a ranked team this season.  Maryland is seeking their fifth B1G Tournament title since joining the conference in 2014 and fifteenth tournament title in program history.


 
Where We've Been
  • No. 2 seed and No. 7-ranked Maryland defeated No. 3 seed and No. 12-ranked Michigan, 13-10, in the Big Ten Tournament Semifinals. Lipkin tallied a team-leading four goals, Edmondson posted three goals and an assist and LaPointe added three goals. It was Edmondson's 29th career hat trick and team-leading 12th of the season. Lipkin posted her 10th career hat trick and sixth of the season. LaPointe earned the sixth hat trick of her career and her fifth this season.  
  • In the opening round of the Big Ten tournament, Maryland earned a 17-11 win against No. 7 seed Rutgers. Kori EdmondsonLauren LaPointe and Devin Livingston all recorded hat tricks to help power the Terps offense. Edmondson (4 goals & 1 assist) recorded her 11th hat trick of the season and 28th of her career. LaPointe (3 goals & 1 assist) earned her fourth hat trick of the season and fifth of her career. Livingston (3 goals), a freshman, posted her second hat trick of the season, matching her career-high of three goals. Sophomore goalie JJ Suriano made six saves between the pipes. Neve O'Ferrall (two), Chrissy Thomas (two), Maddy Sterling (two) and Fallon George all caused turnovers defensively. 
  • The Terps closed out their regular season winning five of the last six games and finishing with a 12-4 overall record and a 7-1 mark in the Big Ten. This season, Maryland has secured ranked wins over No. 8 Johns Hopkins, No. 18 USC, No. 13 James Madison, and No. 11 Michigan. Junior Kori Edmondson leads the offense with 52 points and 43 goals, while graduate student Chrissy Thomas leads the team in assists with 32. Defensively, the Terps are anchored by captains Kennedy Major and Neve O'Ferrall
  • Maryland defeated No.8 Johns Hopkins, 13-11, in its regular season finale on Saturday. This was Maryland's 800th program win, the most by any women's college lacrosse program. The Terps offense was keyed by Jordyn Lipkin, who had a hat trick before the end of the first quarter. It was her fifth hat trick of the season and ninth of her career. Lipkin went on to total four goals in the game.

Maryland will host the Big Ten Tournament after finishing the season 7-1 in conference play. 
Scouting the wildcats
  • Offensively, Madison Taylor leads the way for the Wildcats, leading the team in goals (87), assists (35),  and points (122). Taylor is currently second in the country and first in the conference in goals this season. 
  • In goal, Delaney Sweitzer anchors the Wildcats defense. Currently this season she has a 8.28 GAA and a .500 save percentage. Sweitzer is first in the Big Ten in goals-against average.
  • This marks the 33nd meeting between Maryland and Northwestern. The Terps have historically controlled the series, leading 18-14 over the past 40 years. The two teams first met in 1985, with Maryland earning a 17-5 victory.

Jordyn Lipkin recorded her sixth hat trick of the season and tenth of her career with four goals against Michigan. 
Thomas and Edmondson Moving Up The Charts
  • With three assists in the 2025 season opener, Chrissy Thomas became just the 66th player in Maryland women's lacrosse history to reach the 100-point mark for her career. Thomas currently has 149 points, which ranks her 49th on the all-time list.
  • Kori Edmondson recorded her 100th career goal against No. 3 Northwestern. Edmondson now ranks 50th all-time on Maryland's career point list with 146 career points.

  • On February 14, the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) announced the 2025 IWLCA Hall of Fame, which included Maryland head coach Cathy Reese.
  • Reese has guided Maryland to five national championships (2010, 2014, 2015, 2017, 2019), 11 Final Fours, and 20 regular-season and tournament championships across the ACC and Big Ten. She is recognized as a four-time IWLCA National Coach of the Year (2010, 2014, 2015, 2019) and a 12-time Conference Coach of the Year.
  • Reese joins former Maryland head coaches Cindy Timchal (Class of 2017) and Suzanne Tyler (Class of 2018) in the IWLCA Hall of Fame.

  • Head Coach Cathy Reese is in her 19th season at the helm of Maryland women's lacrosse. The winningest coach in program history, Reese is 345-51 (.870) as head coach and has led the Terps to five National Championships, 12 Final Fours, and 22 Conference Championships.
  • Reese is the fifth all-time winningest active head coach and the sixth-winningest coach of all-time in Division 1 women's lacrosse at 375-80 (.823). Former Maryland head coach Cindy Timchal is the all-time winningest women's lacrosse coach with 580 wins.
