COLLEGE PARK, MD – Despite productive offensive performances from seniors

Mazie MacFarlane, Maryland softball fell to Penn State, 12-8, in game three of its series at the Maryland Softball Complex on Sunday. The Terps honored Bean and MacFarlane prior to the game for Senior Day. Maryland is now 17-28 overall and 3-16 in Big Ten play.
Penn State (23-24, 9-10 Big Ten) used a seven-run opening inning to fuel their in-conference win. However, the Terps challenged in the bottom frame, scoring four runs of their own. Sydney Lewis hit an RBI single, followed by Sam Bean belting a two-run RBI double and Julia Shearer slapping an RBI single.
Maryland put themselves within three runs of Penn State in the fourth inning, keyed by RBIs from Julia Shearer and Sydney Lewis, but the Nittany Lions extended their lead late to hold off a Terps comeback.
MacFarlane (3-for-3) and Bean (1-for-3) still delivered on Senior Day, combining for five runs and two RBIs on four hits and one walk. MacFarlane hit two doubles in her 42nd career multi-hit game and her 18th as a Terp. Bean secured her fourth multi-RBI performance in her last five outings.
Shearer (3-for-4) and Lewis (1-for-2) both had multiple-RBI performances as well. Shearer totaled three RBIs on three hits, including a double, in her eighth career multi-hit game. Lewis tallied three RBIs, her ninth multi-RBI game this season.
Aubrey Wurst started in the circle before Genevieve Ebaugh took over to close out the first frame. Ebaugh pitched 4.2 innings, striking out three batters. Bri Godfrey closed out the game for Maryland.
Breaking Down The Action
- Penn State scored first, hitting a three-run home run in the first inning. The Nittany Lions added four more runs in the frame. They led 7-0.
- Maryland chipped into Penn State's lead in the bottom of the first, scoring four runs. Sydney Lewis singled to score MacFarlane, before Sam Bean slapped an RBI double to score pinch runner Taylor Borovac and Sammi Woods. Julia Shearer tacked on an RBI single to score Bean. The Terps trailed 7-4.
- Genevieve Ebaugh pitched a hitless top of the second inning. She struck out one batter.
- The Nittany Lions added two runs in the third, leading 9-4. However, Caitlyn Cornwell robbed Penn State of a scoring opportunity with two runners on base, making an athletic diving catch in the left outfield for the final out of the inning.
- Shearer singled to left center, driving home a run. The Terps trailed 9-5 heading into the fourth inning.
- MacFarlane hit a lead off double to reach second base before Lewis hit an RBI sacrifice fly to drive in MacFarlane at home plate. Maryland cut the Penn State lead down to 9-6 in the bottom of the fourth.
- Ebaugh pitched a 1-2-3 inning in the fifth.
- The Nittany Lions scored three more runs in the top of the sixth. Godfrey recovered by retiring three-straight batters.
- Lewis tacked on another RBI to score MacFarlane in the bottom of the sixth.
- Shearer drove in an additional Terps run, scoring Gracelyn Solaraz with an RBI double in the seventh.
Celebrating The Seniors
- Maryland honored its seniors, Sam Bean and Mazie MacFarlane, prior to today's game.
- Bean played all 44 games for the Terps this season as the team's starting catcher. This was Bean's second season with Maryland, following stints at UAB and Lamar.
- MacFarlane was a regular offensive contributor during her two seasons with the Terps. The outfielder earned All-Big Ten Second Team honors in 2024. MacFarlane transferred to Maryland after a successful three-year career at Utah State.
